A quick review of what i saw in the game last night.

I had the worst experience with pirates i have ever had while playing this game, here it goes.

I started out a bit slow, i wanted a fairly sized fleet for my first encounter with the pirates. Once i built it up i also began making (or planning to make) trade/merchant orbitals. Soon i managed to take my "breadbasket" asteroid system and before you know it i had a total of 4 trade oribitals (2 at each system) a large fleet around 4 research stations (i modded the logistics cap, disregard this) and things were going swell. I had a fleet of aproximately 50 ships, 30 or more of these being (modded) arcova's and 10 cobalts along with my capital ship. I thought i would finaly be able to survive a game of Sins.

I thought wrong. less that 15-20 mins into the game the pirates came. Not with a small fleet but a HUGE one, were talking about 15 kodiacs 5 flacks and another 5 "cobalts" I quickly and desperately fought to kill the 3 or 4 pillagers invading the system but it was not enough, My capital planet was decimated and a battle was ongoing at my asteroid base. les than 5 min's later another pirate force (this time with about 8 or so pillagers) came and killed off my entire fleet and all my capital planet oribitals. They waited 5 minuites before killing my asteroid base. I had no bounty by then and was far from the computers.

My assesment:

I would (and should) have survived if the pirates had not attacked my asteroid base. The only reason they did was because of my markets there. Does that really warrant a full blown invasion force (That i may add, was powerful enough to kill 15+ defence platforms).

The community needs that patch and we need it yesterday, things like this are happening all over the Sins beta community and its getting ridiculous. i cant survive for more than an hour in this game ! something must be done !

Comon, give them the weekend off haha. They need rest too you know

Its beta remember? it will have bugs and unbalanced things, that is the reason we are here

If it bother you this much, id say, stop playing until the patch is released. It might be released the comming week.

To be honest it's not that "ridiculous" - This is a beta and they're testing what works and what dosn't , it's not really supposed to be that fun right now.

The pirates are stoppable - Just make sure you don't grab a planet close to the sun too quickly, put your enemies at a higher bounty than they've put on you and make sure you build up a defense force quickly.

A capitol ship and a few other ships combined with defense platforms are usually enough to easily hold out against them, just got to make sure you have some spare colony ships and it's easy enough.

They've been attacking one of my planets over and over again, continously throughout the entire game a fleet every 10 minutes or less pops in, sometimes two with three minute differences.

I've got a few capitol ships, repair platforms and a massive defense network which works wonders.

Try playing with a mix of medium and hard AI, I did this in one game and had no Pirates other than the ones on unexplored planets.

Cheers.

Thanks mech9 ill try that.

Last night's game had 2 mediums 2 hards and an easy.

haha... you were unprepared... happened to my my first game of beta 2... but now I know... and so do you, so get some defenses up!

Hmm..

Since playing beta 2 I've been having no problems with pirates. All you really need to do is spam gauss defenses focused around the planet (as I've noticed planets are quite weak until you get the shields). This should buy you enough time to bring in your main force and blow them to bits, or if you've positioned the cannons well, it should wipe them out completely. Be sure to research the gauss cannon cool-down time upgrades - should help a bunch

This strategy worked fine for me on a medium galaxy with 7 hard opponents...

To be honest, they've been the only real challenge in the game so far: the computer AIs (even on hard mode) are horrible - they don't properly manage their fleets
I often get them attacking in groups of two for some reason....
If the pirates get toned down the computer AI will have to be improved

Yea.. with these planets you almost most definitely need to upgrade tactical structures unless you plan on keeping your main force there

I kind of agree, i only ever see these worthless arcova's in my system.

Note: Funny thing, the AI is using my own mod against me and has made around 15 hangars in one sector alone GG Fleet ! lol anyway i think the AI's attack and economic skills should increase. Also, why is it that NO pirates are spawning now ? lol i tried what mech9 said and .. wow it works.

@lordkosc: I was more or less prepared i had a fleet even if it was crap and had a few Gauss cannons... but yeah now im like 3 hours into the game and the only action i had was a horrible raid on that one asteroid base *Its a trap !!*

what works for me is to use up all your defence slots with gauss defence and 2 hangar defence with bombers.

the only thing i'd like is to be able to set target priority's. For example...i'd like to give my planet defence a priority on pillagers (if i don't designate it manually they attack them when the other ships are gone)

Pirates are a horror when you don't have a prepared planet and easy xp once you do because they don't usually change their main target much if you stay as you are.

Good thing about pirates is that they give your capital ships a stream of experience. It doesn't take a lot to take them out, just a few Hangars with bombers and a capital ship or two. Make sure that if they get through, increase security and get yourself the planet shields.

But all in all: Hangars to defend your planets prone to pirate attack... they work wonders as long as they aren't targeted

I have been playing a game for 10 hours total and the last 6 hours I have been fighting pirates only.In one hour I lost 5 planets. It cost me alot to get them back and I was really frustrated because it seemed like I didn't have enough ships to protect my plantes.[Hint:more ship slots.]Anyways I stuck to my guns and started to capture other planets and as I did that the pirate fleets weren't as big as they were before. One thing I did notice though is the pirates will attack a planet with shields and not bother taking out the shield generator.oh by the way...I did have all my defense platforms built at my planets but they were overwhelmed by the sheer numbers of pirates. And my planet losses where before I got the shield generators.
