Gas Giants , how would they work?

I would make Gas giants neutral . They would be similar to stars in that they have phaselanes to and from but cannot be owned by anyone.

I think that would work, but then again if they serve no purpose then there will be little point in having them, while I agree that they shouldn't be faction controlled, maybe more places or a place that marauders come from?

Make it similier to an asteroid
Set collision so they don't react to any solid things
Set the harvester-model add on somewhere near the center
create some special effects, or it can gradually get smaller over time.

Gas giants should be like stars in that they should have a huge grav wells (intentional for ships to take longer to jump in/out). Plus it could have a small colonizable moon (use asteroid model as placeholder for now i guess), and have 1 or 2 crystal roids. That way it wouldnt be totally useless. However you can only build in a small area around the moon you colonized.

Id like to see different types of planets, and moons in game, or 2 colonizable worlds in the same grav well (planet, and small moon). Of course these things would have to be balanced out as to not screw up gameplay.

personally I think as P5y suggested by keeping the neutral, or pirated owned, but not any of the races / factions, but then again gameplay is important, so there could be other uses for them, but yes I agree, other planet types and moons would be cool to see

A Gas Giant would be a dead zone, in the fact that no one owns it. This way it adds a another tactical element to the game. It becomes a place were fleets either stand-off, or a shortcut to another world friendly or hostile.

Example:

Key - T = Terran, G = Gas Giant, A = Asteroid, I = Ice

- T-
TGA
- I-

I have a main base of operations on the Ice planet, my enemy has a base of operations on the farthest Terran world, however its lightly defended. If I go to either the Asteroid Field or the Other Terran world to reach his lightly defended world I will face massive casualties because of his defense forces.

But If I take the Gas Giant route, all I might have to face is an enemy fleet. Because Gas Giants can't be directly owned it creates numerous situations both offensive and defensive.

been thinking, if you could do research on slingshot then whenever entering phase lines from suns and gas giants, ships speed up X2 or X4 that would speed up travailing a lot and speed up the gameplay a bit, as it stands travelling from star to star is really slow

That kinda gives me another idea. Depending on certain research , you could use gas giants for phase jumping to another system. In intersystem wars this can spice things up a bit when there is more then one route between systems
