Planet management

One thing that has struck me when playing this game (particularly in my current large game) is the annoyance of having to go around each planet individually to find which ones you havn't yet upgraded the fleet capacity, or the population capacity on etc. I for one, found the galciv 2 colonies window very useful for managing my planet, and I think some sort of similar system allowing you to view one window listing all your planets and say numbers of the different structures, but I think, most importantly for me, the planetary improvement levels. I don't mind going round when sorting out tactical and logistics buildings as I tend to place them myself anyway. But when I'm hunting around for a planet I can boost my fleet capacity on, I get slightly annoyed

Good point! The game provides an excellent zooming feature for large-scale management, but there is an impedance when you're doing a specific "hunt" for something. I think it was designed with the hope that, as events unfold, things will just... grab your attention... and this will guide where you're zooming. But in your case, you've got a strategy to boost your fleet capacity, and need information en masse. Hence the colony window was born in GC2.

I'm with you on this idea, although I sincerely hope that such a window would not always be present on the screen. The screen's cluttered well enough right now; leave well enough alone and just bind this new window to a function key

Interesting. I agree such a window would be nice. However, I feel that might be skewing the game mechanics off to the 4x side and away from the rts. Not sure if it would be too much.

I totally agree with this idea, and since its a hybrid between 4x and rts i don't see any problem regarding leaning to the 4x side...

ok, for those with a similar conundrum, one method I am now using, is grouping all my planets in one group (usually zero for me) this then makes it easy to select all the planets, and tab through them. If you select the planet improvements pane and tab through the planets, it stays open, meaning it is easy to check things like this.

*STAMP OF APPROVAL*

I am sick of hopping across each planet mid-game and making sure they are all fully upgraded logistically, fleet wise, and defense wise.

Ok, had another thought on this one after examining the UI some more.

There are three context-sensitive values to the left-hand side of the central image at the bottom. When a ship is selected, it shows things to do with that ship etc.

However, when nothing is selected, it shows how many ships and planets you have.

Planets
Cap Ships
Support Ships (frigates/cruisers)

An easier way of doing something along these lines would be to make those into clickable buttons that cycle through said objects. So, for instance, clicking on the planet one would cycle through your colonised planets, cap ships, your cap ships etc.

And if it is possible to do this whilst keeping the action pane on the same page (ie planetary upgrades) when you cycle through the planets, then it would be a next best thing.
