Ship Experience

Not sure if this has come up or not, but it's a thought that I had while playing last night. I love the fact that the cap ships gain experience and unlock new abilities. It's a great idea that a ship and crew that have been to hell and back become pretty bad-ass. However, what I thought about was all the other ships.

I had a fleet that included as few frigates and cruisers that lasted through most of the game, undefeated. It would be great if they could get some sort of "veteran" status. No need for unlocked special abilities or anything, but simply some sort of combat modifier to signify the fact that they've fought a bunch of battles. (After all, even in space, experienced naval crews aren't restricted to cap-ships.)

(I'd also love the ability to pick my own name for cap ships.)

We will be able to name our capital ships in the future, the button that does this and many other things is as of now disabled.

I like the Veteran status idea. Maybe have a few levels, they start off Green, after a few fights they become Hardened, eventually they could become Veteran, and after a long time they become Elite. No abilities unlocked or anything, just some boosts to firepower and shield/hp, similar to what the cap ships get.

I know I'm probably going to get slapped for even mentioning it, but *cough* battle for middle earth *cough* had a very similar system to the one you're mentioning. The Heroes would level up and gain new powers, stat upgrades, etc...and the normal units had a bunch of levels they could gain and become more powerful.

It's one of the few things I enjoyed from that game.

BFME was ok, it pulled me in due to the LOTR high I was having after seeing the 3 boxed set extended edition.

I like the idea of veteran status for the frigates and cruisers. I'll add it to my list of possibilities.

Veteran status may be a way to help differentiate cruisers from frigates.
