To Pause or not to Pause?

So far the beta are fun and great, but I worry about replay ability.
I think the game would be more fun, if you can't issue orders while paused. Thus SOASE will be a real time game, especially with multiplayer. But with the current zoom levels it is very hard to click on enemy ships moving when you want all ships to concentrate fire on one ship. (Currently when you zoom to close, you pass the object you are looking at, and when you a little out, the ship is too tiny to click on or moving too fast.)
I think once a game allows issue order while paused, players will take advantage of it and the game becomes more passive, more of a movie, you click, then watch. Click and watch are great for some RPGs and heavy story driven games, but SOASE is more about strategy and management.
I don't know how, but there got to be a way to bring or at times best for the player to play at the zoom level where the beautiful graphics are, otherwise you can beat the game in 2D icons playmode...not really the selling point of SOASE.
