Who wants more single point static defenses?

Who wants more single point static defenses?

I'd like to see: a long-range missile platform that deals less damage than the guass cannon but has twice the range (you can't run around it!); a flak cannon that shoots bombers (and may or may not target ships, but isn't good for that). Both would cost 1 tactical point, increasing the variety and strategy of static defenses.

Jump speeds need upgrades. It takes longer to jump than it does to move in the gravity wells. With the second level psidar tech you can build fleets to kill the attackers with before they get there. It's the jump speeds, not the gravity well speeds, with the exception of the stars which actually take a significant amount of time to traverse. You can already move your capital ships through the mass of defenses to anywhere you want without taking serious damage, they don't need to be faster

Hangars don't have this problem, however they use a very large number of tactical points, so any one planet will probably only have 8-12 squadrons, most attack forces will have about that many squadrons as well, along with a whole lot of other stuff.

QFT!

Just last night I was doing great and then in jumped an invasion fleet from another star system with what I swear had to have been 15+ carriers and an upgraded Sova. All I saw was a swarm of purple. My poor little planet was ravaged as the bombers picked away at the system defenses and the ships stayed outside the range of the gauss cannons. Didn't stand a chance.

Those fighter/bomber swarms are nasty.

In regards to the gauss cannons, like someone else said, the tactical AI charges right in. So sometimes it's necessary to micromanage or lose the fleet. It's not bad when there's a couple but when there's 6+ clumped up and in charges your fleet... that's frustrating. Would be nice to see more options for the tactical AI.

Or at least an AI that can "read" fleet composition and recognize (for example) the presence of LRM frigates and just stay out of gauss cannon range when they're present in reasonable numbers. (Or if bombers are present in reasonable numbers, too)

Your fault. You need to always have 5 flak frigates at places where the AI is able to attack with carriers. This will shredder his fighters/bombers in seconds, making it's attack failed.

Hangars are only good against AI attack fleets, since the AI is unable to utilize flak frigates correctly. If you use flaks right, no enemy hangar will be able to make a dent in your shiny capital ship armor.
