New Weapon - Ion Cannon?

Is there an Ion Cannon in the game? I can't recall ... it would be nice to have an Ion Cannon to disable large capital ships.

Perhaps bombers could be equipped with a ECM or Ion bomb and Gauss Platforms armed with Ion beams?

There's no ion cannon, but the TEC Akkan cruiser does have an ability like it. When it hits an enemy structure/ship it disables nearly everything on them for a short time.

I am actually planning to play with that ION ability and see if I can get it to make it a permanent disability, instead of just temporary...

It seems almost unfair to me how powerful it is now given that it recharges so quickly.

Yeah but my ship runs out of antimatter too fast

so you want to change the ion abillity to
make it a permanent disability, instead of just temporary...

so to turn a players fleet into useless scrap that can't be sold off(as of beta 2)

That would be unfair.

on a completely seperate note will we see the selling and/or aquisition of ships?

"Ion Cannon in the game?" WHY WHY WHY !!! leave Star wars out!

There is a disabling weapon but is does not have to, and should NOT, follow the Star wars convention of ION = disabling.

hmmm, there should be something like an EMP burst weapon that would disable all unshielded electronics within a certain radius. you could change the amount of shielding you use via the tech tree as well as the amount of research you put into improving the maximum amount of 'juice' fed into each burst. I agree with Erog that it shouldnt be titled an Ion Cannon, it should just be called something like 'short-range EMP' and it would be on a ship that would attempt to disrupt enemy formations by disabling their communications. It should also disable ALL missiles in a certain radius and cause them to explode, not necessairally harmlessly. It could easily be handled by the AI, no need to label it as 'inducing more micromanagement.' Simply when it sees large amounts of missiles en route, such as from LRM frigates, it would fly/ shoot a missile forward and disable the missiles. You could, as with other abilities, micromanage it, sending many ships forward, disabling all of the opponent's ships and then strike with your main force, gaining a split second advantage.

*runs out of steam...*

And you think starwars is the only science fiction that used that idea? The idea is actually very plausible in reality, as is much of the starwars universe (although not their space physics). I can't stand the people who have been exposed to one scifi universe and when they see a similar idea being used in another scifi universe they claim the new one is copying or something the one they were exposed to first. I don't think there is a single original scifi idea anymore because they are all used, largely do the the science part of science fiction.

Anyways, I think an interesting idea for a cruiser would be that it would have no weapons, but would function much like the ECM tank from C&C Generals, in that it would disable a ship for as long as it could cast it's ECM beam on it, there would of course have to be balancing issues to insure noone could make an entire fleet of them and disable the entire enemy fleet, but still, something to think about.

OK, let's call it an EMP cannon!

If you guys think an Ion/EMP/ECM weapon is too powerful, perhaps it could be used to counter long range missles (i.e. missle defence/destroyer)?
