Battlefleet Gothic

Battlefleet Gothic

I don't know if any of you guys are a fan of the mini's genera. Did anyone here ever play games workshops short lived Battlefleet Gothic.

That game was pretty fun.

Some of the stuff I liked from there.

1. Massive torpedoes

Were talking about ship killers that you had to move the ship out of the way from and could use to move other guys ships out of areas that you wanted to go into.

2. Boarding action

You could fire "boarding torpedoes" and basically take over a ship or failing at that sabotage large sections of it.

3. Ramming / Fire Ships

Some ships could ram it was pretty sweet some could also function like a big torpedo.... that was awesome.

4. The ships had sections you could knock out an engine ... that was pretty cool.

5. Ships could really blow up

As in they would implode and take down anyone who happened to be near them that was pretty awesome.

6. Some ships as i recall could use gravitic and solar wind effects

Novalicious.

I'd like to see the Executor take on a Cairn...heh, imagine necron warriors and scarabs getting teleported into the midst of stormtroopers.XD

If we DO have necrons in this, there needs to be osmething to represent the portals.

We'll try.

On the SW/BFG debate, how do we compare the two? There's no frame of reference, so BFG ships could just be hideously oversized, or they could have the firepower to match their size

maybe but an imperial cruiser isn't an ISD fyi, and i'm sure an Imperial cruiser could down an imperial star cruiser :P

Dustin the turkey ftw!

oh and i think that a to or three battleships could take on an SSD

Nova cannon FTW, it's quite possible to toast some ISDs, especially with that ludicrously exposed bridge, and shields in BFG go down only very rarely. However, I wonder how the bombers from BFG would do, because they're huge comnpared to their SW equivalents, so they might get hit by big turrets a lot more, while the SW fighters slip in unhit.

The SW fighters would get cooked alive by the Void Fields. You must remember that BFG shields are much nastier pieces of work than their Star Wars counterparts.

Also: boarding actions. the Imperium would have a huge advantage because of their technological superiority. Storm Troopers vs. Ogryns? No chance.

I don't think that a Starhawk would be any more vulnerable to a turbolaser than an X-Wing or something would be. Turbolaser tracking is OK at best, and a Starhawk would be using longer-range melta torpedoes rather than shorter-range bombs.

In addition, in Star Wars ships engage each other from distances of a few hundred kilometers at most, wheras in BFG the ranges are much longer.

Okay, there's most of my questions about the whole thing adressed, so it's agreed, BFG pwns SW, although I wouldn't say BFG would win boarding because of technological superiority, but their crews are much better armed and equipped for that sort of thing, and I'd love to see a bunch of fire dragons blast their way through to the bridge to take out the commanders while the stormtroopers desperately try to stop them.

howling banshees would have a feild day in a ISD =P

also we are only comparing the err.. humanoid races here crons Vs SW? crons win hands down. orks vs SW? the SW guys would be cowering after one glimpse at the number of em. and last of all nids... i think you know what happens next =P

Are the "crons" supposed to be the imperials?
If that is the case: Totally agreed..

Necrons. Mmmm... souls for the c'tan. Tasty!

Don't forget the kroot, nothing quite like kroot once they get stuck in for sheer chaos, and those of us who've played call of duty 4 a lot will know just how scary the kroot hounds can be, especially once you consider the sheer numbers they can muster. And even worse, if a battlesphere boards, it won't be partly ratings with shotguns and gaffhooks, but just pure man-eating kroot. Nasty thought, and I really don't want to see what happens with a rogue krootox on the bridge.

About the Eldar, we forgot the best alpha strike team of them all: Warp spiders. Nothing can touch them or try to stop them as they shred the unarmored crew.

Worst possibility of them all, though, is a terminator with assault cannon. It can't dodge, but then neither can you, and he's just some wheels short of being one of those bizzare mecha-on-treads tank toasters you can occasionally see in anime and mech warrior.

Okay, back to topic, is there anything that you really want to know about or anything you want to see in the feature list we put on the fancier mod post?

Starwars was made by a dreamer while BFG was made by military historians and scientists, obviously theres going to be a huge friggin difference. The mere fact that for some reason SW shields dont seem to stop fighter craft from entering them so i'm guessing its not going to stop huge shells and torpedos from coasting in and shredding the liveing hell out the ship. Dont get me started on the failure of tie bombers HOLY SHIT- they would get murdered to the ship not to mention BFG ships are literally covered with small caliber weapons where ISD's seem to contain a very limited number of CIWS.

Hahahah i could just see a boarding torpedo hitting and some jedi leading a party of troops to try and stop a space marine boarding party with their slow fireing blasters 'dont worry i got my light saber to deflect BOOOM AAAUUUGHH MY EYES!'. Compareing modern day ship sizes to the requirements of a space combat ship i think 5km is actually very modest because you literally have no reason to limit the size of a ship since your just adding more and more armor and systems- why have only 4 reactors when you can have 12 and carry way more armor?

I personally always hated SW because it had the potential to be the warfare to startreks science and peace but NOOO! you just had to make them space liberals- fuck the rebels their system is unrealistic, the empire had the right idea.

Hate to disagree with you but I have a few reasons.

Structural strength increases as the square of the size, while weight increases as the cube, which is why shipbuilding only really got huge when they started using steel for ships. Also, you start falling into the same trap as my 'fleets' did in Galciv 2, and when you have to deal with the warp to move quickly, that all-killing behemoth becomes largely irrelevant, because it can't be everywhere at once. Also, the length of the cabling you have to run to power all your weapons gets a lot longer unless you use multiple reactors (not a bad idea, but if they're big enough to cause splash damage when they go, maybe it is after all), put the reactor(s) closer to the surface (completely obviating the advantage of being able to put the key stuff behind more decks). And if you look at the description of the Armageddon battlecruiser, it'd appear the maintenance goes up hard with added guns. Finally, and most importantly, the calculation for moment of inertia (which is what determines turning speed) depends on the square of the radius, so even one more kilometer, and you're talking about a ship that can't turn in a turn. Unfortunately, ships that are basically prettified space hulks have limited use in a battlefleet.

Okay, less nerdy engineeringness from me. Anybody want to know anything? Want a piece of cake? (I swiped it from portal and boy is it good) Any excuse to return from OT land? :p

did we tell you we got a new modeler on board? might be able to figure out xsi better than i can...

anyway a quick warning i'm bout to be hit with my half-yearly exams (about one week from now)so i will be under a bit of mental strain for the next few weeks

anyway i agree with X this needs to get back on topic
Reply #614 Top
Yes, topic. Glad to hear we have a new modeller, great news, figuring out emitters will be great, as will getting more models. Also, I completely sympathize with the half-yearly examinations business, seeing as I just finished the AP tests for all the wonderful advanced courses I took, and they were a really hard piece of business. :NOTSURE:

wtb skinner! I'd offer gp to finish the gag, but I don't have a wow account. Seriously, though, other than the name of a skinner who's helping us, what do you want to see on the feature list?
well that's all i want particularly right now...
I want an ETA. ;p Atleast for the beta version.

You could probably make uber basic skins in XSI

sometime in the summer, most likely, because I won't be able to work on the mod till then, I've got a really big computer science project that went awry, and it's gonna take some time to fix, and honestly, I'd rather enjoy passing the class. :NOTSURE:

Oh, and sure, once the gameplay stuff is done, I'll try to figure out skinning or see if anybody else wants to/can.
Sweet. What grade are you in (college or high school or what?). I'm taking a Java class next year along with Graphics Designs (might help me learn alittle skinning, or atleast how to use photoshop). I might take AP Computer Science the year after that.

Senior year of high school, but this project is for a class where we're doing some serious college level stuff. Take AP compsci, hopefully you're going to a good school where they teach it to you right, and you know all the AB stuff before the test. The theory in that class is good to know, and Java is a really good language to know well. We're doing computer graphics. In Java. It's pretty hard but damned awesome. Right now, I've got all the stuff I need in wireframes, but for the final project, I need to be able to ray trace it or actually shade it somehow (ray tracing's easier and cooler, so I'll be doing that. Last term we did some serious linux systems programming, which was cool, that was in c.

Here's a sample of the shapes I've got now in wireframe, a torus, sphere and box, and I can do some cool transformations to them. The shapes are stored in a matrix of all the points, and a list of all the pairs that make lines, if you're into the nerdy details, so it's all geometrically based. Neat stuff. Can't wait till CS 101 next year. :p

Oh, and be warned, it looks like crap when zoomed out because all the lines are only one pixel thick and the scaling fails :NOTSURE:.

Dammit, sorry, that was not on topic, but oh well. I'm still waiting on uzii for the planets, I think I'll try his email rather than a PM soon. Other than that, no new news.

LOL! Summer in the where I live is typically June - August.

Late November - Sometime in February or March is Winter.
March/April - May/June is Spring
June - August is Summer
September - November is Fall (up where I live we can get snow at Thanksgiving, which is the 25th of November, all the way up to April and rarely May).

Hail the continental climatic system!

Up here in boston our year goes cold, erratic, warm, hot, erratic, cold.
