Battlefleet Gothic

Battlefleet Gothic

I don't know if any of you guys are a fan of the mini's genera. Did anyone here ever play games workshops short lived Battlefleet Gothic.

That game was pretty fun.

Some of the stuff I liked from there.

1. Massive torpedoes

Were talking about ship killers that you had to move the ship out of the way from and could use to move other guys ships out of areas that you wanted to go into.

2. Boarding action

You could fire "boarding torpedoes" and basically take over a ship or failing at that sabotage large sections of it.

3. Ramming / Fire Ships

Some ships could ram it was pretty sweet some could also function like a big torpedo.... that was awesome.

4. The ships had sections you could knock out an engine ... that was pretty cool.

5. Ships could really blow up

As in they would implode and take down anyone who happened to be near them that was pretty awesome.

6. Some ships as i recall could use gravitic and solar wind effects

pictures will be excellent. I don't know why the ships want to use their left broadside, but it doesn't really matter for now, and I think that the sins ships with unbalanced broadsides are armed more heavily on the left. The emitters just mean that the ships don't shoot from the right place, but are otherwise fully functional.

Think Kiernyc, the sooner you take those pictures the sooner you can start using it in the virtual world *nudge nudge* ;p

no, we're just quite into situational irony. In other news, I just got my new laptop (it's glorious!), so it'll take me a day or two to get everything set up after friday, which is the new due date for my cs project.

NO WoW! Bad Admiral! :p I'm almost done with my project(hooray!), so I'll be back to full work mode soon.

Here's the thing...

I'm going off to bandcamp (band nerds FTW!) on the 22nd...and I'll be there for seven weeks.

Is there ANY chance that the alpha will be together by then?

probbly not the way things are looking we are still working on importing problems but after that things should roll i'm estemating around early next month is the most likley time
as soon as we get somthing worth releasing to you loyal dudes(and dudetes if there are any =P)we will i think that once we get all the ships modeled coded and imported we will release it to you people who we have designated as testers

I'll try to get you something with the one model we have that works flawlessly, so you'll get chaos cruisers and hopefully planets and the like, along with a possibility of planets. In other words, I'll try to get you everything I can from 7:30 AM (when my cs project becomes done whether I want it to be or not) on. Sorry it won't be complete, and it may take me a little while to find out which member of my slaughter collection is the right one, but I will get you something cool to play with, and I will use this as motivation to get as much work done on the alpha as I can. Have fun at band camp (I'm assuming you'll have a laptop) and come away from it sounding like (insert musician famous for skill with your chosen instrument here). Sorry that we've kind of gone dead when you really needed a surge in productivity. It won't be pretty or elegant, per se, but it should have the functional bits in so you can have fun, and inert's models look really good in game.

Whoa i havnt been on these forums for a LONG time. Ha ha. Anyway, in my half-a-year-long absense, i have started getting the battlefleet gothic models, and i now have a 2000 imperial navy fleet. I have been lurking every now and again on this thread over the past few months, and ive been watching this mod progress. i must say, it looks/sounds good so far! I am REALLY anticipating this mod, so if there is ever a testing phase, i would LOVE to help you. if you need/want another tester, im all free :) also, if you ever need photos on the models (i only have IN, so i can only get you IN models) just ask. And anything else, i am willing to help you with. I desperatly want this mod up and going, and will do everything in my power to help you. GREAT WORK!
Also, where may i find your work? ie. pictures? thankyou, you are doing a great job keeping BFG alive. If you cant contact me through this site, then im a member over at PortMaw.com, which is one of the fan-sites for BFG. My name is Chang ;)

BTW, heres my photobucket of pictures, of my fleet. i hope they help in some way =D

Wow, thanks a ton! You have 2000 points of IN? Lucky, I still only have four IN and Chaos cruisers. I've got some screenshots I've taken from a testing version, but they aren't all that impressive yet. I'm going to wait to post them till they look a bit better, because as of now the Weapon emitters arent' working right, so the ships shoot from the center. If you want to see the models, check out the gallery in our modcraft page at:

WWW Link

You're definitely on the testing list now, we'll see how soon we can get the alpha out.

Hey, I dont care if they dont look any good or anything, I am actually still in shock looking at your models on previous pages, they ROCK! Its actually really amazing what you all are doing.

I hope you dont mind, in fact, im going to use this post to formally ask you, can i 'promote' your work on the BFG fan site Port Maw? As in, have a progress report every now and again, and maybe a few screenies. Will that be allowed? Im sorry if you say no, because i have already started a thread there with a few pictures, if you dont want that, i can delete it.

And the fleet; I only just finished painting it a few weeks ago, its a reletivly new fleet, and hasnt tasted combat yet, which i hope to change within the next few weeks. My list is an Armageddon sector fleet list, which means i can have space marine ships in my fleet as well.

My fleet:
Prætorian Class Battleship 385 points (custom made, has the same stats as the Ad Mech 'Ark', only minus the nova cannon. If you wanna know what it looks like, its something like this)

(This image was photoshpped, it actually isnt an official one hehe)

2 x Imperial Cruisers 180-210 points(they have been magnetised, so they can be any class)
2 x Imperial Battlecruisers 245-270 points(they also are magnetised, and so can be any battlecruiser)

6 x Falchion class escorts 35 points each (torpedo boats)

4 x Nova Class frigates 50 points each (space marine)
4 x Gladius Class Frigates 45 points each (space marine)

I am quite proud of my fleet, although added up, along with postage costs and paint, its left me broke =[ its going to be a long while before i can get the planned 2 x space marine strike cruisers and another squadron of escorts, probs SM Hunters, bringing points to 2500.

anyway, if you EVER need my help, just ask. If you want pictures of ships, its done. If you want them done from certain angles, done. Also, with my magnetic cruisers, i am able to change the class around, if you wanted to look at different classes.

Just took a look at your link, impressive work, this mod will be the best one ive seen so far, also, it will be the ONLY BFG mod out there, as all other ones have never been finished.

That Praetorian Battleship looks rather powerful for 385 points.

I dont think i would've enjoyed fighting one back when i played BFG.

Or maybe its just been a while.
Its pretty much an Imperial 'Ark' battleship. As said before, the stats are exactly the same bar the nova cannon (and the 'stats'; eg. no 6+ prow, less turrets, and its slower)

The Prætorian is only 30 points cheaper than the Ark. I think its fair.

i'm confused, and unwilling to read all the posts, can someone tell me if there is actually a BFG mod in the pipe? because it would be the best thing since Chuck Norris
Reply #691 Top
Can i answer this one? I just want to be apart of the mod :) i want to play a part. So far, that part is explain it to Archaon6044. yay. Anyways, as far as i gather, the mod hasnt been finished yet, it will still be a month or two untill even the testing version is out, so i have no idea when the whole thing is available. Most* models are done, they just need textures, and they are working on the animations ATM.

*most, not all. they ahve a few buildings, and ships.

(i dont know how accurate this is, im a secondary source. best to get an answer from a primary source)

[sorry if im wrong, i tried =/ ]

I will continue to be patient, in waiting for this awesome mod to be completed. I've been wanting a pc game version of BFG for so long, that my freakin teeth hurt.

As for my own fleet, im sitting on:
1 x Retribution class battleship
1 x Mars class battlecruiser
1 x Overlord class battlecruiser
2 x Lunar class cruisers
2 x Gothic class cruisers
1 x Dominator class cruiser
1 x Dictator class cruiser
2 x Endeavour class light cruisers
1 x Endurance class light cruiser
1 x Defiant class light cruiser

And the worst part is, I have a decent job, not alot of bills, and my future fleet will be gigantic in comparison to what I just listed. All told, im just shy of 2500 with this current fleet.
Do you have the actual Voss pattern light cruisers? They're so rare...

I like the Praetorian, it's a battleship with a definite role, and is designed to deal with that role primarily. When compared with the Emperor, it pays 20 points and the sacrifice of a chance to get an easy 8 launchbays with leadership 10 for the price of an ld. 9 admiral (which is amazingly cheap for IN) to trade 8 launch bays for four lances, and much better off-side firepower if the enemy tries to surround it. The large weight of broadside gunnery could be devastating if he gets to fire all of it, but to do so, he'll have to try and bring in a soft-prowed battleship into the teeth of the enemy firing line, which not only compromises the strength of an unbroken wall of 6+ prows, but is also asking to get his flagship crippled early by WB fire while the enemy lances can still rake his cruisers' prows. When you look at it from the perspective of a long-ranged fire support ship, it presents a very interesting alternative to the Emperor. I like it.

Right now, we've got models whose emitters aren't fully set up and need textures. I'm getting my computer set up for modding, so I'll start working on the planets and getting ships into the game.

Augustinian: No escorts???? I mean, sure theres alotta firepower there, but your gonna get torn to shreds by anyone with escorts. Theres no way you could fend off a more manuverable attack, say by the eldar, your ships rear ends are too exposed. I mean, yes, you ahve those Light cruisers, but you still need a few escorts....

anyway, yes those light cruisers are very rare, you cant buy them anymore. Did you buy them before they went out of production? or are they scratchbuilt?
Escorts are negotiable in my experience, they're very good in some cases, where you can cut into the other guy's ungunned arcs, but if you can get guns on them they turn into popcorn. They have a very good firepower for their cost, but they're very easy to kill as well. Plus, a well-aimed swarm of ordnance can really do some damage to escorts. A pair of Gothics can really put the hurt into an escort squadron, although the cost disparity is worth consideration. I'd much rather have a pair of dauntless than a sextet of escorts, because the dauntlesses have the hull to absorb the escorts' attacks and the lances and wbs to toast two or maybe even three escorts a turn when combined with their maneuverability (same turn, just a bit later, so if you think ahead you can keep an arc line on the enemy squadron) can really put the hurt on escorts and then swing back to the firing line and pick off cripples, all for the price of a cruiser and escort. However, the Imperial fleet is really weak against Eldar, and swords are one of the few things that give them a chance (the others include upgraded tyrants (still disgusting, but actually worthwhile here) and Emperors). But that's just my opinion, and I'm something of a dauntless fan, whose fleet is going to be a cruiser core backed with a Mars, Emperor and two Dauntlesses. However, Imperial escorts are rather good, so don't let my opinion dissuade you. I just don't love the idea of including them because you can't take them with the fleet on your attack run unless you want to leave a juicy target for you opponent's wbs as you close, and if you swing them wide, they can be picked off with AC at leisure. However, I play a rather AC strong fleet (or at least will, once I get my Emperor), so that might not be much of a problem for you, and if you can get all that firepower pointing at your opponent's aft or soft prow, they're well worth the points.

I'm still trying to figure out what my IN fleet's going to be made of, but I'm relatively sure my chaos will look like this:

1x Repulsive
1x Acheron
3x Devastation
2x Carnage
2x Slaughter

I particularly enjoy the Slaughter, it's such a steal if you can flank the enemy fleet. I once brought an Emperor down to two hits with my slaughters (I play a lot of games with the battlefleet gothic module for vassal, so I can play with a lot more ships than I actually have and figure out what I want), although it did take a lot of lucky rolling (I made 11 out of 20 rolls against a 5+ with my wbs, and got the rest with lances and previous shield damage).

My imperial brainstorming is limited by the fact that I don't like tyrants, prefer Gothics and Dominators to Lunars but don't want all the Nova Cannons this would put in my fleet, and strongly dislike Overlords (I think they're undergunned for their points cost and role as a support cruiser, sure they can put out a broadside of equal strength to a Lunar's, but only one, and wb fire doesn't stack neatly, along with the points for a prow they'll never use. Of the battleships, I'm only truly fond of the Emperor, and I'm not much of an escort man, so that limits my choices considerably.

I have an Armageddon fleet list, which means i cant get Dauntlesses, but i do have access to Space Marine ships. As said before, i plan on getting two strike cruisers to fill the role of light cruisers in my fleet, and i also want some more escorts. The imperial escorts are good, i agree, but have you seen the Space marine escorts? They are faster, yet retain the same weapons. and the Nova, which is the equivilant of a firstorm, has one lance at the front which can fire in the port starboard and front arc, not just the front arc which is what the firestorm is restricted too. and, yes i agree, when i was thinking of a fleet to buy, my main aim was for a gun heavy cap-ship fleet. But then i had a battle with someone, using his SECOND fleet (omfg) using 6 imperial cruisers (2x gothics, 2 x lunars, a dictator and a dominator) and i was torn to shreds. He used his chaos fleet, which out-ranged my fleet, and out manuvered my fleet. my ships werent fast enough to get into a good firing arc, nor were they fast enough to avoid fire. i couldnt fire safely from a range, because most of my ships were limited to 30cm riring range, bar the nova cannons, and he had sufficient AC to fend off my torpedo attacks. it lasted 2 and a half hours, and at no point was i winning. in the end, i gave up and disengaged my last (abiet crippled) dictator.

At the end of it, i vowed never again would i be beaten because of lack of speed+manuvers, which is why i chose the Armageddon fleet list. Space marine ships are fast. i vowed that for every cruiser i owned, i would have a squadron to go with it. so now you see me with 4 cruisers, and 4 squadrons of escorts. i have yet to have a battle, but i am planning on a huge engagement with someone during the school holidays, using all 2000 points worth of ships. now your wondering where i am going to get my firepower from; This is where my Prætorian Steps in.

Now your wondering how im going to last, escorts cant soak up much damage now can they? Well if you work it out, im not actually losing anything in terms of the amount of damage i can take. take this example.

My Prætorian (which is exceptionally strong for a battleship, and so is why im using it as an example)at 385 points, has 12 hits, a stg 15 WB broadside, and a stg 4 lance broadside, 15cm speed, 5+ armour , 4 shields and 4 turrets.

Now, for the same points, i can get 12 Sword class frigates, which have a total of 12 hits, stg 48 WB broadside, 25cm speed each, 5+ armour, 12 sheilds (added up)and 24 turrets. Now tell me that isnt awesome.

Not only all this, but you get the added benefit of having multiple targets. Ie. the battleship would be a lumbering target, which the enemy could focus their firpower on. The escorts would be all spread out, and the enemy cannot target all of them at once, and so it is a slow and painful task of killing them one by one.

Now you think, wait, the battleship has more range. Well this is made up for by the speed of the escorts, they can charge towards the enemy to make up for the range.

One last thing, the Prætorian has 15cm speed. it MUST move 15cm before it can turn. if it is shot at, and a blast marker is placed on its base, its speed is reduced by 5cm. See where im getting at here? That means if an enemy is clever, he will continuously shoot at your battleship, not to kill, but to prevent it from turning. It will NEVER be able to turn untill it leaves teh blast marker, and until then, its a giant target, which cant turn. So off goes your battleship, off the board. its now disengaged. bugger. 385 points down teh drain.

OMG i typed more than i intended, sorry for clogging up your thread hehe. just explaining the importance of escorts, i LURRRRVVV escorts hehe. im not angry or anything, im not arguing, just saying some facts. dont be offened in anyway please ;)

EDIT: why dont you like tyrants? i have one with the upgrade ( i only just found out u can give the upgrade to any tyrant, not just one named the same as the one in the rulebook) and it now has stg 10 WB at 45cm range. it also has torps. i like :)

Actually, I just recently started collecting BFG, so it's particularly hard to buy the voss pattern for the actual models. To substitute, I purchased the Admech light cruisers, which have a remarkably similar build, and am currently in the prcoess of remodeling them.

And as for the escorts, dont you fret none.

As it stands, I plan on topping out my collection with:

4 battleships
8 grand cruisers
12 battlecruisers
24 mixed reg and light cruisers
and here's the best kicker of all,
108 escorts, a solid mix of swords, firestorms, and falchions.

Quite a goal, but easily reached in less than 4 months with the allotments I have set aside for the game.

After all that, I plan on adding a ramaillies and few space stations and misc vessels.

Anyways, to fix my lack of escorts, the next purchase which is happening in a week will include 12 blisters of escorts, plus a couple light cruisers.

That's quite the fleet there, Augustinian.

Chang, I honestly don't know who's right on the matter of escorts, personally I favor attack craft because they're so fast and maneuverable, and attack through shields. If you compare an emperor to those swords, it can put out 8 bombers a turn, and if you hit a sword squadron with that, it'll lose most its ships if not all, and the Emperor will hit first due to the escorts' need to close, and this brings up the escorts' other problem. Until a cap ship is crippled, it keeps all its firepower, while any hits on an escort squadron damage its firepower. That's my reason for taking attack craft over escorts (well, that and the fact that escort squadrons are a nightmare to turn in vassal), although your reasoning is equally valid, especially considering Armageddon fleets don't get Dauntlesses, which are just absolutely fun to use (I think I'll eventually get a trio of them) and barely cripple or lose firepower when braced (1 lance and 2 wbs barely matter), so they're surprisingly durable.

Hey, just a thought Augustinian, because BFG doesnt have that many players anymore, maybe instead of getting that uber fleet, maybe get two seperate fleets, so that friends of yours can game with you. my reasoning is this: witha 2000 point fleet (my size) you can have 8+ hours of gaming fun in one battle. Im telling you now, you will very rarely ever see another fleet that is at the 2500 point level, which means if you want a battle, you will have to 1) only use a fraction of your fleet or 2) split your fleet in two so you can have a battle. option 2 IS valid, the only problem is it will get boring vs the same type of ship every game.... if you have two seperate fleets, not only do you have the ability to play with friends of yours who dont own fleets, but when you do, you wont just be facing the same colours your using. There will be variety.

lol, just a suggestion, im just saying, if mines at 2000 points, your fleet will be 15 000 + points, which is sorta going over the top, you will rarely, if not never, use all of them in a battle.

@xthetenth:
if we ever have an engagement, i pray my escorts will win the day, and you pray your AC will win the day. then and only then will be able to judge which is better! hehe judgement day awaits, dunno wen, but it will happen lol.
Chang, that's just the thing. Once im finished collecting that armada, im fully intent on collecting more.

And you're right. I will never have the opportunity to use that huge fleet all at once. But the same could be said for my space marine and imperial guard forces for 40k. I've always had the philosophy of go big or go home. Currently have over 500+ models for my imp-guard army, and 200+ models in my marine army.

I guess one would say I have a problem and/or addiction.

But really, im just bored, and collecting these things entertains me to no end.

Anywho, to keep with the theme, the next fleet on the roster to be completed will be a marine chapter-fleet. After that, a chaos invasion force. After that, an eldar pirate lord's fleet. And so on. and so on.
