Trade ships not crossing interstellar distances?

I'm just about to finish my first multi-system game. For most of the game I have had one system all to my self while the AIs were fighting among their selfs. After they sent a few scouts into my system they started offering me cease fires and trade agreements (probably because they saw my armada of capital ships). I thought "ok, sweet. I can earn more money while they fight each other to the death." But after a while I noticed that *none* if my trade ships would cross the interstellar distances even though I had both the empire tech and the artifact tech researched that lets me jump to other systems?

Is this working as intended?

Refinery ships travel interstellar, trade ships don't for some reason. I do not know if thats "working as intended" or not... and I sincerely hope it isn't!

Well, multi appears to be wrong: Take, for example, my single-planet star systems in a recent game... the trade ships built there just sat. And I have never seen trade ships go inter-stellar, unlike refinery ships.

Did you build a trade port in the other system? [/stupid question]

OK, let me rephrase slightly: take for example the three single planet star systems, all of which had their tradeships standing still, along with the (very active) trade net in my single multi-planet star system (from which I'd just "evicted" some unwanted tenants, consolidating my control over my natural territory!).

Yes, I'v build trade ports at all of my planets. Within a system I see trade ships and refinery ships moving constantly between planets and asteroids, but I have never seen a trade ship cross the link between the two systems that I own. Also, because the trade ships dont move between systems then there is no point in havening a trade treaty with another civ 2 systems away.

Ron: I dont think I'v seen refinery ships cross the interstellar link either but I have not paid enough attention to them. I just noticed the trade ships because of the lack of trade between me and the other super-power 2 systems away.

I'm almost positive I've seen refinery ships cross, but I don't think I've seen trade ships do it either.

just tested it myself, and trade ships dont travel across solar systems.. i must have been mistaken them for refinery ships

I am glad I do not play in multiplayer. I can insult Multi as much as I like and s/he can't track down my empire for thermonuclear retribution.

i think we need one more logistics base at least.

that is an interstellar trade post.

since the current traders are now restricted to one system.

these interstellar traders would carry more and the pay would be a bit higher than the steller traders.

also these ships should be the same size of the capital ships.

(i did start my own thread on this but it hasn't shown up so i have reposted here where the action is.)

Actually, yes it did show up. (edit: As shown by the fact that you edited it to point here sometime between last night and this morning) You just need to be patient, this forum is rather... slow about showing those things. The "home" button takes you to a place where new stuff shows almost immediately... the sub-forums can take up to a half hour to show new posts.

Anyway, your overall idea is rather odd, but having them "as large as capital ships" is just plain silly.

So who wants to buy this Asteroid I just colonized? I will trade it for 3 cap ships & 2000 crystals

why according to the storyline that is where the caps came from trade ships that is.

and the ones in the game right now are frigate size maybe a little bigger

A trade ship during wartime is useless unless it large enough to carry a number of goods, yet small enough to be maneuverable and quick. A large bulky ship would have too much inertia to accelerate quickly and would be easy prey for other ships. Therefore, trade ships, especially those of the TEC whose main income comes from trade, would have to be medium sized and quick. Like the ones they currently have implemented.
