Brainstorm: Planet Bonuses

Brainstorm: Planet Bonuses

the current patch has brought in a new idea, search based planet bonuses. currently there are a few (and they arent bad, I like porous core!) but theres no harm in throwing together some ideas for the devs. so here are a few of my own

Heavy Metal Core (d): opposite of porous core, a bigger gravity well
Thin Atmosphere (d): resistant to being nuked, but lower populace limit
Strong Ionosphere (d): propoganda takes longer to expand near planet, decays more rapidly
Intelligent Populace (s): functions as an extra military or civilian lab
(if there are gas giants) Protostar (d): hard to detect entering/exiting gas giant's gravity well
Hydrocarbon Atmosphere (d): increase in exports, prone to nuking
Pirate Base (d): increase in trade, greater populace limit, much greater infrastructure health
Hostile Conditions (d): slightly lower populace limit
Crystal Deposits (s): slow to mine, but infinite source of crystal found within planet
Metal Deposits (s): slow to mine, but infinite source of metal found within planet.

(s) : indicates found upon search
(d) : indicates known upon discovery of planet

obviously the benefits cant be too powerful (explods upon culture switch!)

yeah, the only special I've ever seen go unacompanied is corous pore, every discovery otherwise is either paired with more discoveries, or with a special ability found upon entering the grav. well

Peculiar orbital dynamics

what does this mean?

I like having the possibility of 'clumpiness', however it should be very rare.

Ok, let's see if anyone can beat this: Two worlds, one jump away from each other.

Volcanic World: Habitable Cavern System
Kalanite Deposits
Expert Metal Miners
Dense Molten Core

Asteroid World: Kalanite Deposits
Porous Core
Expert Metal Miners
Expert Crystal Miners
Relativistic Factories

Anyone else have extraodinary luck in the bonus department?

Well, I had a planet with Expert Crystal/Metal Miners and a trade bonus (I think it was Kalanite deposits, I still have a save if you want me to look it up...).

for some reason expert miners (both) get tied together with kalanite deposits... almost always

anyway, stag I think the close together uber-planets was a fluke.

speaking of which, there needs to be an upgrade to scouts so that they can tell if enemy planets have said bonuses...

I LOVE the multi-bonus planets...they upgrade asteroids and demote planets sometimes. It is a perfect balance...but there should still be single bonus planets. A wide variety with bonuses being rare, and multi-bonus planets beingg more so, but not unheard of.

Eh, some of the bonuses need to be exaggerated -- the grav well increase / shrinkage ones are hard to see if they're doing anything.
actually they're quite noticeable (at least the shrinkage one is, havent seen the growth one) the shrinking one BARELY has enough room for placing structures.
Well, I've seen the growth one... and can't tell, really.

That's more a problem with zooming imho. Try comparing it with a normal grav field, they're quite larger.

In my last game I had one of those on my reinforcement lines to the front. It took forever for ships to fly through the large grav field, slowing my down considerably.

Btw. I love the entertainment hub. Free culture!

I'm really exited about the patch, but I don't know if I can download it...

I'm stuck between either an amazing computer with a slow-as-balls internet connection,or a crappy computer with a 6bmps connection, curse college and heavy computers :/

get an external HD and transfer <3

Make an archive with stardock central, burn it to a disc and install it there.

what???

bring this someplace else...

Well, I see the moon idea I had brought at least some fruit. Yeah, no moons...but still.

As far as ideas. Here's some off the top of my head:

Expert Ship builders (s): reduced ship building time
Fertile Soil (d): Increased population limit
Ancient Civilization (s, possibly artifact): Speeds up research

And now that I finally got the sucker installed, time to dive in.

In my most recent game I got the following:

Porous Core
Kalanite Deposits
Expert Crystal / Metal Miners
Phase Accelerator's

Everything except the Porous Core came out of the first "search" upgrade. The second one showed up nothing. All this, on one planet. Wow.

BTW, here's an idea: Transforming bonuses. A bonus that, as you explore the planet, changes its nature.

I. E:

D: Noxious Fungus: A noxious fungus makes living here impossible, reducing maximum population and population growth rate greatly.
S1: Noxious Fungus: Researchers have counteracted much of the fungus's effects, rendering this planet much more habitable. Several chemical compounds in the fungus are harvestable for medicines, slightly increasing pop limit / growth.
S2: Noxious Fungus: Ability to farm the fungus has been achieved, and you can harvest it to best effect. Great increase in pop limit / growth, and trade bonuses.

A great idea by Ron

I really like this Idea.

It could even be the other way around:

D: Rich concentration of valuable ores in the crust, but also a very diverse and rich, although highly instable, ecosystem. Slight increase in resource mining, high increase in culture and taxation.
S1: Industrial exploitation. Medium increase in resource mining and tax generation.
S2: Industrial Wasteland. High increase in resource mining refining. Destroyed ecosystem lowers culture generation and population cap.

Schem for once has a great suggestion!

I agree, well proposed Schem

Hey Schem... Heavy Metal Core does already exist in the game... but I don't notice the difference in the grav well's size.

so I've been made aware, you can probably just change the difference in the ability in the game files until the devs make a proper (and large) adjustment

then again it could be that its there and you havent looked properly.

No... I don't like that. That makes the search upgrade a waste, instead of a good thing.

thrawn look at how small the firing ranges are as compared to the normal grav well size, the large grav well size is almost as big as the usable grav well area of the sun.
the usable grav well area of the sun.

O.o when did you colonize the sun?!
*slaps self in forehead* I only wish you could colonize the sun, and i should have said the area of the suns grav well that you can maneuver in.
