Game Setup Options

Streamlining?

Something that has been bugging me for awhile about the Beta is the clumsiness of the game setup menus. in order to change anything you have to click the button repeatedly till you get the option that you want (except for your faction icon). If the option you are changing is your faction color, you can't even go back a color because the list seems to randomize each time you click. Could we get some simple drop down menus for selecting options instead of the button mashing option? The rest of the game flows so smoothly that it just seems a shame to have such a clunky UI for the user's first part of a game experience.

Agreed.

Glad you guys approve, but I was also thinking that the black market/bounty UI needs some upgrading. I think that the system is great, but I would like to choose how much metal/crystal I am selling/buying or how much bounty I am putting out rather than just doing it in batches of 100. Or if the batches of 100 is here to stay, at least let me type in how many batches I want to buy/sell/put on someones head instead of using the aforementioned button-mashing.

Hold down shift should help you out.

Blair,

This doesn't do quite what I meant, this just maxes out the bounty/sell/buy that you do. I was talking more about being able to only buy say 50 units of metal instead of 100 or the maximum that I can buy with the credits I have.

Actually, it multiplies the amount of the click by 5 or 4 depending on the window. You buy / sell in units of 500 resources, and place bounties in amounts of 1000 (instead of 100 / 250).

ah thanks for clearing that up ron.

but it still isn't what I meant, I want to be able to buy/sell place bounty in a specific amount, say 150 or just 50. Somtimes i don't need 100 crystal or 200 creds i just need 75 crystal or 125 creds.

Unfortunatly, thats part of the streamlining required for real time, as opposed to turn based.

The blackmarket/trade system is being reworked. So maybe Daishzen will have his option

Yeah I understand that you need to streamline for RTS, but could we at least have the option to go the slower more precise method if we want/need to. After all we are talking about a game that is going to be epic in proportions no matter how small your galaxy is so I would think that there is going to be down time in any game single or multi or campaign.

I agree with the developers in concept that the game needs to be streamlined, but you can streamline the games controls and have that be the default input mode and then also have commands to open up a more detailed ui for things.

maby u could just have a section for typing in what u want this would solve the problem

Let me rephrase myself, that I don't think you're going to have time for anything more precise, so its streamlined to fit into an RTS.

Ron, have you timed yourself while trying to buy/sell the amount you want. I'm pretty sure that I could type in say 1000 quicker than I could pound the button 10 times. Yes the current system is streamlined in the sense that it is simple to use, but I don't think it is quicker to use than other options. And if the devs want to keep the button mash method, they can do what Jperzio suggested and just add a text entry box in as well so that you can button mash or you can type depending on your preference/situation.

So something like this:

*****************
*Text Entry Area*
*Defaults to 100*
*****************

*****************
*Button
*Buys/Sells amount in text
*****************

I would think that that would be an even simpler interface than what is currently used.

If you hold down the shift key, you sell/buy in increments of 500.
so it only takes you half a second, if you're as slow as para here.

its been streamlined, at best MAYBE they will include a feature (such as clicking with control) to half the ammount you buy/sell, but I never ever work in those increments, I dont see why you would.

I don't have to time it to know that any reasonable amount (2000 or less) takes far less than the simple act of moving my right hand off the mouse and finding the number pad. Especially since I'd first have to click on the special field, then type the numbers, then click on the buy / sell button.

Yes the current system is streamlined in the sense that it is simple to use, but I don't think it is quicker to use than other options

If you actually read (and applied) what has already been mentioned, you'd know that you can shift-click, so for any reasonable amount its quicker just to hit the button. I mean, come on, the shift click is all of a pinky's move away!

The only reason for what you're suggesting to be superior is if you're micro-ing in smaller-than-100 units for some reason, which I don't think you'd have time to do very much, if at all, or if you need to do massive amounts of buying/selling.

And if you have the resources to pull that off, the games already won.

I can see your points Ron, and I have started using the shift click since it was pointed out earlier in the post, but I would like to see the text entry because it gives the option to anyone who wants it and you could implement it so that it also works just like the present system.

I bet that Ironclad will iron out the market screen a bit before release. I also imagine (stronly hope) that they allow a bit more option in the diplomacy screen. It would be cool to have more economic bonuses for trade alliances. They should also add research treaties....hmmm, unless they are too unbalancing, of course.

One last thing that would be neat would be a 'deal' type option in the diplomacy screen, where one (or both) of the players agreeing to the deal have to either stay at peace (or go to war with someone else) for a set time limit. Hmmm, then again part of the fun of any type of deal is worrying about somebody being less than honest with you.

Yeah, definitely. Heck, I'd just be happy with non-aggression packs being separate from alliances. I am getting really tired of the AI taking my "lets not kill each other until later" proposals as "lets be bestest buddies!"

Both Diplomacy and Research are getting overhauled.
