Pirates a bit too strong?

So I am just messing around in SINS, 1 enemy on easy, just taking some screen shots and stuff, and occasionally taking over an enemy planet...

And so I figured, I want a really good shot of the Pirate base.

I fly over 4 Kodiaks and 4 flak frigates, and low and behold at the pirate base I find... 191 ships...

Hmmm, a bit overpowered? Maybe...

I think the pirate base needs ship cap, say 50 ships at the max?

Multi told me I would have needed to control 30 planets to be able to have enough fleet slots that I could take them out...

RUN AWAY! RUN AWAY!

I have never seen this. At what point in the game did the pirates reach this level?

I guess this gives you an incentive to wipe them out before they get this powerful. On the otherhand a cap may be reasonable as I can not imagine how the dead asteroid could support this many ships.

I have seen the ai take out the pirate world on medium difficulty so maybe this only occured since it was on easy and this is very late in the game? Since the player did not take out the pirates and the ai may have been to weak/docile to do so they grew to this unlikely strength.

Minause une trois

Argh, my ears.

ménage, not minause.

ménage à trois means household of three

ie. a sexual relationship between three people.

Grrmmll... grammar... grmmlll...

Btw. nice pirates you've got.

I would like some of them for my games too. I need a good enemy once in a while.

I'm going to guess that that was both a defensive fleet and a massing offensive fleet.

Otherwise, its just way too powerful (edit: well, on smaller maps anyway... larger maps that'd be perfect).

big pirate fleets like that are kind of cool though.

One of the best things about Masters of Orion was the Antaries however that's spelled... it was VERY hard to take them down. And every so often they'd send in an invasion fleet that would f' you up if you weren't ready for them. Often you'd just have to say "well, I lost that planet and I'm ok with that" *tries to smile*... they were tough and a fun challenge in the game.

Another idea for pirates is "privateers" which are basically allied pirates. Pirates in your territory that don't hurt your ships but prey upon enemy systems... then run back to your systems to sell their booty, repair, and rearm...

No, I think a minause une tris is different. It involves 3 people, one of which has a Penoose.

it also makes a lot of sense for the pirates. Look, the last thing they want is some huge battlefleet coming into their territory and blowing them up. But by making a deal... something pirates are happy to do if it benifits them they get an even SAFER place to work, selling their goods becomes easier, and they don't have to lie about what they do in polite society.

The civilization that shelters them on the other hand basically gets "free" mercenaries... the only people that lose are your enemies.

... Not really, just launch a (bunch) of emissions guided missiles. Poof, they're dead. Heck, you could also just clean up with a doom star or two later in the game (only needing 2 because of that stupid black hole generator...)

Meh... in any game like that difficulty is measured in number of turns required to do it. The number of turns required to take them down was a LOT.

Yeah, primarily because of the need to get the special dimension gate technology.

That's a bit odd.. I've never seen more than 20-30 at the base myself.

rofl a tad excessive!!!

I like the mercenary tech idea or maybe could do diplomacy with them after getting a communications tech (bargainings and safe haven etc).

One thing I find puzzling is the lack of communications techs given that the distances between systems are VAST and yet we can get comms?

Is it possible to tease a few away at a time?... or shell them all at long range and then run away? Or do you have to go in there and fight them head on?

There should be some late game tech that lets you just murder large numbers of ships at range... give a counter at the same tech level... But that would be the pirate ender.

maybe that'll be the superweapons?

*rubs hands together chuckling evilly*

i'm SO gonna press that red button. Is it possible to have a red button? Pretty please!

You stole my idea! I was just going to post that!

So it may come as no surprise that i too like it.

I would actually love if a host of indirect warfare options where added.
Where's the spies with the ability to temporary disable certain structures in a system?
That causes local unrest, that makes all your production somewhere temporary slow down to a crawl?

The mine layers that let you booby trap space lines?

Spy drones to attach to other players merchant ships?

Elite Storm troopers that could possibly take over enemy ships?

Cheers

yes but its more psychologically satisfying with a red button...any one tells me not to do something I always have the urge to do it hehe!

indirect warfare options I suspect will be in the game...would be great to mine space lanes and to ping a planet for your ally (with the enemy in it)so you can set him/her up to be wiped out via a previous agreement with his/her enemy.
