Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

Sins Beta 3 - Technical Feedback *POST HERE*

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 3.

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 3 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

If you'd like to give us some non-technical feedback, please post it here:

https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/index.aspx?AID=163062

By keeping this information in one place, it will go a long way towards us making Sins a better game!

Thanks!

Wicked Flea, it looks like your crash is caused by your video card. Can you check that you have the latest drivers for it? What is the card make and model?
Wha? I have a Geforce 8600GTS 256MB, driver version 162.18; so far the drivers have been rock solid, and the card hasn't overheated so much as once when playing Sins. (It did with World in Conflict's demo a few times though.)

I wonder why it even hangs there. A pesky shader perhaps? I'll try downing my quality a notch, but I've got a really long game going and that hasn't been touched by the error.

mmm, i have a couple seconds stutter a few seconds after loading the game
Reply #79 Top
When I start or load the first game after starting Sins, the game stutters for half a minute up to two minutes. Afaik that's because the game is loading textures and stuff (my Radeon 9800 is pretty old). After this, all games following don't stutter in the beginning and get started nearly instantly.

After this (which happens always just once) the game runs perfectly smoothly.

I wonder if there can't be something changed, perhaps that the game preloads those textures or so? It's kinda annoying that I've to wait 2 or 3 minutes for the first game...

Hi i got the Beta 3... ace game but it crashes (Game freezes then goes black but I can still move ingame mouse cursor) at this point I alt tab out and vistas pops up a box about its recovering the gfx drivers.

This happens after 30mins or so if i reload the game it happens again even sooner, so i reboot pc instead to get a longer go a playing.

Also during the game it freezes (including mouse) for a few seconds then it comes back to life

Ive emailed you my directx report and minidump. Oh pc spec if someone is going to ask is:

Vista Prem 64bit
2.4Ghz Intel Core2Duo (6600)
2GB DDR2 Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 7950 GT
NVIDIA NForce 680i SLi Motherboard
x2 500GB (SATA2)
x1 DVD-DL (SATA2)

Drivers all updated and checked as of today including BIOS

Hey, I dont know if this would count as a bug. But in a game with me and nova I accidently turned on the Russian function on my keyboard. This pretty much disabled all of my communication options and I was forced to drop from the game without any notification. I tried disabling the function like I did normaly by ctrl + Ring, but it didnt disactivate it.

Can this be fixed, or can there be like a few preset thing you can say by a combination of letters or numbers. Like quick phrases that you wouldnt have to type out fully like "Under attack", "Have to go".

Vandenburg (and maybe eet): in your user settings file, set IsTextureBackgroundLoadingOn to FALSE. It will jack up your game loading times but when it gets in it should be smooth.

i dont wanna, i like having instaload, lol

thanks anyways

Scrolling forward or backward with the mouse wheel always causes a zoom out to occur. I am unable to zoom in with the scroll wheel.

All other apps and games on my system work fine with the scroll wheel.

I have a Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0.
I've tried turning off scroll wheel acceleration and moving the scroll speed to its lowest setting.

The M AI seems a little too persistent with destroying planets. I had one leave it's fleet flying around my planet after wiping out the surrounding structures and use its one little capital ship to slowly peck away at the planet. The problem is it was essentially getting nowhere, and had it's whole fleet tied up in that area. It didn't start moving it's fleet around again until it finally took out the planet a good 30+ minutes later. Might be intentional for the M difficulty level though. Just thought I would point it out. Absolutely great game though.

time for tech report.

Installed it on my old desktop pc because the mouse problem was driving me crazy.

stats:

AMD Sempron 3.000XP
Win XP SP 2
Nvidia GF 44000 Ti
512 MB Ram

Details medium, standard resulution.
medium random galaxy, 6 players in total (2 per solar system)

there was a problem with the planet textures, the seemed transparent, you could actually see the ships behind the planets. I will try to get a driver update, since I haven't really been working much with the computer.

otherwise the performance was very nice up until now which is about 5:50 into the game, with rather big engagements of about 4 cap ships, 10+ cruisers and 50+ frigs on one side. there the computer did slow down a bit, especially when zoomed in closly. not terrible, but for a really big and long game I consider switching to lower settings.

as for multiplayer I cannot yet comment. I've been in the lobby once and confirm some of the comments made.

a distinction who is in games or game lobbies und and who is acutally avaiable in the chat is needed.

are there personal messages?

chat screen should be bigger, the current one is getting too full too quickly with a few people in.

is there a list of games in progress?

maybe to get an idea who you are playing with a short statistics might help. i.e. how many games has someone played? how many wins and losses?

communicate with people in games if in lobby and vice versa. Civ IV did this quite nicely if I remember correctly.

that's it for now, gameplay feedback needs a bit more analysis, but I like it so far, good job.

Given that a 4400 is way below minimum spec, feel lucky.

Well, the devs have stated that its a placeholder, i. e. temporary until they get a "decent" system in place. So I'm not too worried about its (many) flaws.

I do, I just figured I might as well try it out and no matter whether it works there is one more tech report for the team.

ships and asteriod textures seem good though. nebulas and the like look funny, but I'm not sure if that is intended or just again my system.

Three times has sins hardlocked on me in a 2v2 with the AI's.

I've had to hit reset, as I couldn't even terminate sins through CTRL + ALT + DEL.

I turned on the logging for the third time I loaded it and got this report prior to the crash.

AudioSystem: LoadSample Failure: Not enough memory : .\Sound\hyperspace_ChargeUp.ogg

System specs

AMD FX 55 (San Diego)
LANPARTY UT nF4 Ultra-D
2x1 GB OCZ EL DDR PC-3200 Titanium (2-3-2-5)
Nvidia 7800 GTX (WHQL 163.69)
Creative Soundblaster X-FI Fatality FPS (Latest driver)
WD Raptor 150 GB
Microsoft Windows Vista Ultimate x64 (All hotfixes/DX updates)

Besides that, I've come across two minor issues.

- Allied AI under locked teams says "hope you aren't working agaist me covertly", which is silly since it's obviously not possible to be covertly.
- Idle ships doesn't attack 0 health structures, ie. structures just placed by the player/AI in the grav well for building.

believe thats on purpose

Lobby doesnt show player ping. Hard to tell who is lagging
Reply #92 Top
its not computer lag, I've had consistent results of the same thing whenever I'm playing ANY sort of map of ANY size with ANY ammount of units.

fyi my computer only lags for 1/4 second every 4 seconds when I play with 200 planets, so it has nothing to do with computer power.

I think the game isnt optimized for use over extended networks yet.

- Sova carrier uses Embargo while it's in plasma storms. Duh? It should only use Embargo on auto-cast if it's in a grav well under enemy control, IMO.

- AI has an near impossible chance of spreading it's empire across planets if it starts next to Ice/Volcanic planets, it a) can't figure out how to manage it's research stations such to reach the required techs or scuttle older stations in favor of say more Civic stations, even if it has a minimal amount of planets. And second it can't figure out to go past the volcanic/Ice planets to colonize asteroids beyond the planets it can't colonize. The same goes for the new Plasma Clouds/Magnetic Clouds ect.

AudioSystem: LoadSample Failure: Not enough memory : .\Sound\hyperspace_ChargeUp.ogg

Oops, found the culprit. Didn't have the pagefile enabled. ><

Speaking about the Sova and the AI, the AI tries to use carriers in battles in plasma nebulae, where they can't be used, thus losing lots of battles there.

-------

More a modding related problem, but players seem to get a random playerId assigned, thus making it impossible to set teams so, that they'll start next to each other. Instead where they start is random (at least I've found no logic behind the assignment ).

In my opinion I think the lag is either based on how many people are playing the game, and also what time it is.
lag is based on either the hosts computer or his upload, or the slowest other person's computer/download. remember, this is all run P2P, so its the weakest link breaks the game

I noticed a camera bug. It seems that icons are always drawn in front of 3d models, even when they are behind in game.

You are right Netriak, however this one is intential.  The icons are rendered later so the player can easily select any unit - Think semi-transparent units behind buildings in other RTS games.

I dont know if this is even a bug (and it probably has been reported by now) but when there is debris (little chunks of rock) in a GW they all clump to one side, regardless of if it is a planet, an asteroid, a belt etc. just seems odd compared to the old (better) system where asteroids and planets would have the debris scattered throughout the GW, rather than off to one side.

There are all different types of asteroid deposits, including the one you described.  It's possible that you just happened to get this one a lot.  We felt the standard scatter was boring and put a lot of work into making sure there was a variety of types.  Some planets will still get random scattered asteroids, a dense pocket, a belt, crescent, and more.

Just played my first two solo games in Beta 3. First game was a random 10 player game against 9 AI with medium difficulty - took about 11 hours to finish. Second was a two player random game against 1 AI on hard. Reporting some oddities/bugs I saw:

1) When you kill some enemy fleet units with a bounty it subtracts from their bounty score. This bounty score gets reported to you as an increase in the bounty in the audio.

2) When displaying the details of a fleet I had Icon Stacking on. I had multiple units of a frigate in the fleet in the same system but the stack did not display the number of units but only showed one unit. Clicking on the stack in the fleet display caused the number to appear. This didn't always happen.

3) I saw units moving out to jump to the next system appear to fly further out than the jump limit circle. It appeared the units had a wider circle that was I was viewing. This was in an asteroid system.

4) Blow up effects appeared delayed. The unit would be destroyed but the actual explosion wouldn't show for a second afterwards. Destroying a world would happen but the bombs would continue to go off for a few seconds afterwards.

5) When giving a fleet an order to coordinate the jump any unit that was not in the same system as the fleet (new units being built with the fleet as a rally point but not yet arrived) would not respect the order and would individually jump.

6) When you're attacking a system and the AI starts a new build my units will not automatically attack the 0 strength structure. It will be ignored until I manually give a unit the order to attack and destroy the structure.

7) Have some trouble zooming in using Caps Lock. It appears I always zoom in to whatever is centered in my screen with zoom cursor off. I was expecting to zoom in to whatever system I had focus on but that's not happening. I have to center that system with a double click then zoom.

8) The auto placement of structures sucks - especially for the Gauss defenses. They get clustered behind the planet.
