are you talking about the zoom to curser thing? i dont like it either but i just toggled it off at the top of the screen...

Two ways to turn it off, button on the top or in the user interface options.

the old zoom to cursor worked alot better

no, I mean the old zoom to cursor vs. the new one

guys guys guys, I've been here since beta 1 -_-...

anyway I realize its probably nescessary on some level with the new planetary arrangement, but I wish it wouldnt force me to look at whatever I might have accidentally cruised over.

Yea, it is incredibly awkward sometimes.
yeah, you might want to zoom in on a scout, but BAM you're on the star ten zillion miles away.
yep, don't care for it either...

I like the idea for small objects (scouts, ships, orbital structures) but its simply a nuisance when it comes to the bigger objects, like the planets.

It could be a good idea that if you have something selected it zooms to that obect if you have nothing selected it zooms to our cursor.

For those of you who find it awkward, could you explain in more detail what it is you're trying to zoom in on and what it is you're actually zooming in on?

IE Are you in some planets grav well, trying to zoom in on a ship and you find you are being sucked towards the planet? Or towards some planet on the other side of the galaxy?

Suggestions welcome!

I have, for the most part, enjoyed the zoom system. The only thing I would change is to have it zoom to the unit or object selected regardless of where the pointer is when something is selected, and otherwise zoom to the pointer.

Disagree strongly.

I really like zooming to some ship when I've the cursor over it and then "freezing" my view on this ship. Even when I've other ships selected.

Planets and Stars on the other hand should never be selected by the zoom function, since if they do it happens that you want to zoom on some tiny little scout but since you missed it by a bit you zoom into a star some thousands kilometers away.

its mostly an issue with zooming in on small objects, missing by a tiny fraction, and ending up zooming in on some extremely distant huge object (for example a planet or a star)

in general the system feels clunky to me, I liked the old system because view was completely in the players hands, now there are certain auto-zoom protocols that pull me around when I'm trying to zoom in on a certain area

granted, this isnt a huge issue. what really matters is when I get sucked half a solar system away from where I was pointing my cursor.

Yea, that is really annoying, esepcially when something is in phase space, cause it travels so fast by the time you zoomed in to that level it has already gone farter away.
actually I like how it tracks objects in phasespace, although I would prefer if the objects came to center screen rather than staying wherever you were zooming in on.
Oh, yea its nice that it track them but if you want a close look at the unit you zoom right past it or behind it, cause it moves to fast in phase space.

A couple of thoughts:

a) If you want an object to come to center screen, you can focus it by ctrl-clicking or double-clicking.
b) If you want to get a close look at a ship in phase space, keep your cursor over it or use ctrl-zoom

I completely agree that it should not grab planets when you're trying to focus on something smaller - I'm sure we can improve this. On the other hand, you want it to grab planets when you're trying to focus on them

Any more ideas?

Oh k, well that fixes most of the issues, thanks

Would be nice if it was a little easier though.

Yeah when I am centered on a moving unit i will follow it but eventually it will shake me off and leave my view its very annoying to view ships in phase space and have them zoom away. I feel like a cat playing with a mouse.

My feeling is that the zoom functionality didn't only change when using 'Zoom to cursor', but also when this is turned off. When I was playing a bit yesterday, I had some problems trying to zoom into a battle, either I coulnd't zoom in any closer while I was still looking at icons, or the zoom would go to fast and right by the ships.
In both cases I could get this resolved by first double clicking on the ship I wanted to toom into, and then zooming again.

You may prefer the locked camera mode better Gauntlet03. In this mode you can stay on the object as long as you like.

My minimal play with the Beta is about 30mins so far, hope to get some time in today.

But I have noticed with the zoom, it works well at slow speeds, so if you click the middle mouse wheel every second or so, it does the job. It is when you do a really fast scroll (as is normal practice) that it goes somewhere completely random!

I posted this in another thread.

Oh btw, i like the zoom to cursor thingie, but i have some ideas.

It should only ZTC when zooming in and not out. Plus if you click the mouse wheel to centre on a unit the ZTC should be automatically be disabled until you move the camera. That way you have the best of both worlds. In my world at least.

Cheers

The first thing I noticed when zooming in was that I didn't seem to have a good control of depth - how far and fast the zoom worked. It would constantly zoom past a ship I wanted to see up close.

I checked my mouse wheel settings in the control panel and saw that it was set to skip 3 lines with every click of the wheel. I changed it to 1, and now I have better control of my zoom to cursor.

If you find your mouse wheel zoom speeding you past your objective, check this setting. It might help.

Or, even more fun, it'll zig-zag, going in then out if you try to zoom fast. Really annoying when you need to get elsewhere, fast.
