Protecting Stars

One thing I wolud like to see is some sort of way to buld around stars since they are so Important to Inter-Galctic Travel and the only way to hold them is to move a fleet into its Gravity well

They're neutral ground, thats the point. There have been discussions in the past over building in the star's grav well, and they never game to anything. Unless you have a new argument, I doubt that'll change.

Edit: If I were you, I'd point out that the shift from phase-lane based interstellar travel to free-style means that instead of needing 1 or 2 such fleets, now you need one for each star...

I think if you own an entire system you should be able to defend the star.

Thats my point somtimes I own an entier system but pireats can easly come in and atack my worlds

and...

thats because you're too powerful!

Too powerful, lol no such thing. I agree that there should be build options around stars. The current A.I. seems to try and bypass my fleets sometimes and I'd just like a way of preventing them from entering my system via the star. Perhaps phase disruptors, just anything that will prevent an enemy incursion into my space. It's just kind of annoying and ridiculous to see an enemy fleet try and break through yours and then have to chase them.

how about if you control every system in a star you may then build at the star?

gaunt.

anyway continuing on:

I beg to differ.

so basically you want to be able to defend super-cheaply so you wont have to deal with pirates.

...

I dont support that idea.

You want people to stop coming in at the star, then you gotta work for it. Go to each other star system and take control of each planet that connects to each star. Then defend the hell out of them. Other than that, you're out of options unless they change their mind.

Its building a bridge and getting over that now a mess of an rubble your fleet is.

Cause sadly, this is Sins, you have to defend things in difficult situations sometimes. It is what makes a good RTS.

The only problem with the stars is that your ships slow WAY down when around it.

This appears to be Ironclad's kind of gravity... ie the bigger the well the slower your ships move. But I think it works against the game play. Ships should be able to move around a big gravity well quickly. What I really don't understand about the way the well works is that speed is generally reduced as you go deeper into the well, This makes no sense.

If there is to be no orbits, then at least make the effect ONLY slow down radial departure from the well. Traveling laterally or around the well should either not be effected at all by your depth or if anything INCREASED in speed as you get closer. As obviously a ship deep in a gravity well would orbit more quickly then one at the edge.

Allowing better mobility in the well would allow a defense fleet to more easily engage an assault force.

Ships are supposed to only go slower leaving a grav well -- and go faster heading into it.

Exactly. And they dont move slower just cause they are around the sun, it appears that way cause the suns gravity well is larger.
really? I heard the devs say that ships decrease in speed as they go deeper into a grav well.

is that wrong?

As to what ships are supposed to do, ron... do you honestly think you're telling me something I don't know? That was my point.

which is why ships slingshoting around suns planets and roids would have been a great idea lol

To me it looks like the ships go the same speed. I don't think the size of the well doesnt matter. I dont think i would like speeding up/slowing down in the middel of moving across the well - that woudl get unpredictable and kind micro wouldnt it?
you'd only need to do micro if the pathing AI wasn't aware of of the well. That's a different discussion though.
and if the AI wasnt aware of the fact that the smaller shipswere supposed to be traveling with a large group and run ahead of everything else

is that wrong?

yes.
