Idea about open-space/phase lane discussion

Hi,

I don't know if there is still discussions about that, but I thought of something. I personaly love the phase-lane method. My idea is to be able to discover new phase-lane as the game goes.

Having a civic research (high-level) adding a "phase-lane navcomputer" to the scout frigate would enable the frigate to explore around and try discover new lanes. Of course, discovering new lanes would take time, so the frigate would have to move along the edge of a gravity-well, slowly and at some places (in fact the lane exists, but they are invisible and unusable until discovered), the frigate would find one.

Oh and I know that this might sound "no need", but personaly, I would like a visual explanation on why does planet x don't have a phase lane with planet y even if there is nothing between them. Having an asteroid belt or a space cloud of something would be a nice visual effect in my opinion. I'm not talking about the gravity wells being asteroid fields, but a real asteroid belt on the map.

That's about it!
Thanks for reading.

I like the idea for an advanced gameplay option. It would shake things up to discover new lanes... though i don't think it should take too long, just have it be a tech you research and then perform an ability in system using Allot of anti-matter... that ought to slow total exploration down a bit.

sounds interesting and I agree, it should be fairly high level tech. at least worth exploring.

I don't like the idea of not being able to jump from my homeworld to one of my other
planets in another system without going to the sun.

It just takes too long.

that has just about nothing to do with this topic...

Well, you're going to have live with it -- its part of the basic design.

anybody else have an opinion on the subject? Maybe de Devs will have a look at the idea if there is more "i like that" comments

Im not a fan of the idea either; I want orbiting structures and moons, but I dont really want to manage completely open area for this game... I Like phase lanes.

what are you referring yourself to with this? before you posted that you like the original proposed idea of discovering new phase lanes via research (at least as an option), which is widely different from an open system. I still like the idea.

I think having undiscovered lanes would help move fleets around. Because one map I played had the lanes in 2 zig-zag. No lanes in the middle connecting north to south. So basically I would have to split my fleets to the east and west.
If you control 2 planets with phase inhibitors, you could control 50% of the map.

How about a technology to build a structure to create lanes? Would require 2 structures and need fairly high tec.

The Vasari are masters of Phase technology, so you may enjoy playing them.    As for new, undiscovered phase lanes appearing during a game, this is something we'd discussed internally, but I'm not sure if it's going to make it in or not.

I KNOW I'm gonna enjoy playing as them

not as much as the space elves, mind you.
