Civilian Traffic: The Cruise Liner

What if freighters were not the only ships to use the trade centers? What if there were all sorts of civilian traffic that ran from system to system. Yes I realize that too much would needlessly over load the processing speed of a lot of computers but space travel is hard and expensive anyway so there doesn’t have to be A LOT of traffic. I think it would be awesome to see massive cruise liners going from planet to planet. After all people need to be transported to, not just trade goods. When a planet is first colonized it would grow at a very slow rate until a trade center is built and more people can be transported in by these massive people movers. The regular growth rate would still need to be high enough to allow for planets to not have these trade centers. And the population on them wouldn’t come from nowhere. They would come from the planets that are already maxed out.

But more then just the population aspect would be the fact that Pirates and Enemies would now have substantial non military targets to prey upon. If one or several of these cruise liners were destroyed it would ruin the moral of your empire (or at least their starting planet?). Thus making them prime targets for your enemies to pick off in a "dirty" fight. You could assign parts of your fleet to guard or escort these ships or possibly whole shipping lanes in general. Thus a small fleet of frigates would constantly be patrolling your trade lanes looking out for stray pirate or enemy ships.

This idea came to me when posting in the IDEA: Pirates thread. There I said that pirates would disguise them selves as civilian traffic such as cruise liners or high priced private "yachts." Thus making it easier for them to slip into the middle of your empire and attack your undefended areas. But say, what if you had ships patrolling the trade lanes. Then you would catch these pirates and they would be forced to find a trade lane you weren’t patrolling. Or maybe even be smart enough to time their trip to slip through a poorly patrolled area.

In all I would love to see more civi traffic, making it important to guard this traffic or pay the consequence of not doing so. I think it would add a nice element to the game. What do you think? Good idea? Bad idea? Other types of civi ships you’d like to see… Maybe tweak the concept a little in a way I didn’t think about?

It's been discussed before, and IIRC the response was that something like that might show up post-beta.

This would be kind of nifty.

Maybe the cruise liners could be politically neutral. They could improve the income of the planets owned by the current losing players. Like tourists taking pictures of a soon to be extinct race and buying their piece of it so they can show it to their friends when the traviler race is extinct.

haha, I just wouldn't build them if it made me lose moral.

In my head, no one builds them, they just show up and lend a small amount of income to the losing parties and tour the planets before they are orbitally bombarded.

These pleasure cruises could go to non-colonizable areas "for fun" and every once in a while get jumped by a small band of pirates...

This would force you to secure areas with a couple small ships.

hmmm... maybe that's too much of an annoyance...

Perhaps a small Culture spread bonus due to tourism. On the flip side enemy's with civie cruise liners hurt your culture (perhaps the Broadcast Center can be used to spawn civie ships). Oh yea, the AI pathfinding of the civie cruise liners MUST be as stupid as beta 1's (traveling into enemy territory).

I would like the idea of the cruise ships being spawned from broadcast centers, there is also the idea of orbital taxis, ships going from those little stations above a planet to the different stations you build that can be blown up to reduce a planets population or infrastructure?

There can't be any ocean liners in the game since they were all converted into Arkan Battlecruisers.
no...
it said nothing about all the ships being converted. the reason you cannot have ocean liners in this game is because... well... no ocean.
It said civilian ship DESIGNS were converted for military use because they had no use for military

Ughh Schem, I was making a joke about the Arkan Battlecruiser looking like an ocean liner/pleasure cruise ship.

It was for Schod.

I would like to see more traffic, or at least 'hear' things from the current traffic to make it seems like somethings going on.

Hey, they still do that.

This is a great idea, and would add a lot of depth to this aspect of the game. +1

This could be present with one of the broadcast towers upgrade, they could exactly like trade stations, in that the liners go from tower to tower, this makes you a little money but more importantly would spread culture faster.

Twould be nice.

Yup, you can see Cathy Lee Gifford singing "If you could see me now" beneath the glass dome of the Akkan, you just have to zoom in reaaallly close

... and ... and... and... we could have a new research tree for cruise ships!

My ships would have the Pizza Oven upgrade along with the Brew Pub upgrade... My culture would spread like wildfire!

good luck playing as Pizza the Hut!

-I was suggesting it would just be a benefit of the Existing Culture upgrades not a new upgrade-
