Hard cap on fleet points...

I've been playing a game in the 'Areolian Sector' map over the weekend, and while I was busy steamrolling the AI's with my big fleet, grabbing their planets and upgrading them, I noticed that the fleet points I had left stayed at 114 all the time. I didn't lose any ships so I started noticing that the number didn't change.
When I finished the game, and had a look at the after game statistics, I noticed that there seems to be a hard cap on 2000 fleet points. Isn't this a bit low? I reached this limit while I had less then halve the planets in this galaxy colonized (around planet 29 - 30 I think). If I have the resources and the planets, why shouldn't I be able to build more ships?
When I pre-ordered this game I imagined playing in a very large galaxy with a few hundred planets with a few huge fleets fighting it out, but with this hard cap in place, I guess it will stay just a dream

I never said I was opposed to allowing the cap to be higher, but it can be done in SP easily as someone pointed out, and for MP it can go the route of most other games, add a modifier for fleet cap.. the current 2k can be 'medium', large can be 4k, small can be 1k or something. I'm sure most will agree 4k is more than enough for even the largest maps
