Hard cap on fleet points...

I want HUGE fleets dammit...

I've been playing a game in the 'Areolian Sector' map over the weekend, and while I was busy steamrolling the AI's with my big fleet, grabbing their planets and upgrading them, I noticed that the fleet points I had left stayed at 114 all the time. I didn't lose any ships so I started noticing that the number didn't change.
When I finished the game, and had a look at the after game statistics, I noticed that there seems to be a hard cap on 2000 fleet points. Isn't this a bit low? I reached this limit while I had less then halve the planets in this galaxy colonized (around planet 29 - 30 I think). If I have the resources and the planets, why shouldn't I be able to build more ships?
When I pre-ordered this game I imagined playing in a very large galaxy with a few hundred planets with a few huge fleets fighting it out, but with this hard cap in place, I guess it will stay just a dream

Yes it is capped at 2000. That cap however, is easily moddable for single player. Look in Sins of a Solar Empire\GameInfo\gameplay.constants file and maxshipslots is the first entry to edit.

Not everyone has a fast maschine and we want to play MP without beeing kicked because the hardlimit has been reached.

aldarin then WHAT are you doing in such a big game? be smart about your choices, dont drag the game down for everyone else.

A cap of 2000 is... a Large Number of Ships

The hardcap value would be a nice "advanced option" when starting a new game.
Something like:

Maximum fleet supply: low - standard - high

2000 is a large number of ships, but I WANT MORE!!!!!!!

Dont think ive ever broken 500 on a fleet cap

at 600 my pc would probably melt so thats a good thing.

It's the fleet supply cap. So with a diverse fleet that would be probably around 150-300 ships. That's not really a lot.

I've played games against the AI on custom maps with modded settings where I had fleets with thousands of ships.

Only problem is, it totally screws up pathfinding, formations and phase jumping.

I am personally against hard caps, but with my pitiful system i can see the need for it. 2000 fleet supply is quite allot. That is at least 4 or 5 good sized fleets with cap ships. My games never broke 300-400, and i usually have 2, or 3 big mixed fleets (i only play small to medium maps).

PS, this is fleet points, not actual ships for anyone who didnt get it

Ew... a hard cap

No no, I got that. That's still a lot of ships, probably more than enough unless you're having major engagements in more than one system. No reason not to make it increasable, though.

And you do have major engaments in more that one system even in a small map. Which doesn't mean I feel the cap should be higher, I just think another way of preventing bigger number of ships (supply cost in a way of contant money and resources drain) would be FAR more appropriate. And believable.

Yes, it is a large number of ships, but when you're playing a large galaxy, with multiple stars, you need a large number of ships to protect all your planets. Certainly now that there aren't any phase lanes between stars, so any star can be attacked from anywhere...

And if I can easily reach this cap in a (admittedly large) map supplied with the game, I think the cap is too low. If the game really needs a hard cap, at least place it somewhere you shouldn't reach in a normal game.

Well I'm sure the cap was put in for more than just an arbitrary reason "Hey how about a hard cap? 2000 sound okay?". We can just guess as to what it is I never said I was opposed to allowing the cap to be higher, but it can be done in SP easily as someone pointed out, and for MP it can go the route of most other games, add a modifier for fleet cap.. the current 2k can be 'medium', large can be 4k, small can be 1k or something. I'm sure most will agree 4k is more than enough for even the largest maps

you could make it vary based on map size.

guys the bottom rule is that this game was based on NOT having a set arbitrary limit, if your computer cannot handle it PLAY A SMALLER MAP.

Ah because YOU want a bigger game and because YOU dont care about others, I dont have the rights to play this game?
Was that the point...

But because I dont think like that -> Me, Myself and I

I have to admit that Annatar11s suggestion seems to be a good solution for this.

has nothing to do with that ald. people on war3 dont play epic maps if they have a bad comp, they just stick to smaller ones, thats all hes saying (even though hes really meen about it )

no, it means if you cannot swim stay in the shallow end, rather than dragging us Olympic gold medalists down with you.

I think anyone has the right to try to the play the game however they want. I'll never be the guy to ask someone to drop cuz they are laggy, its just not cool. Its nice when they volunteer to do so for everyone's benefit, but bitching too much about lag and technical issues is mean at times.

  Well put.

*sigh* again not what I said

I'm talking about people complaining that their computers completely drop out in which case nobody suffers from them not playing in a realm they cannot handle.

Well, in a way it is already based on map size because the fleet cap is dependant on the number of planets you have, I don't think there should be any other limit then that.
