I always feel like a Harpy

One thing I found a little frustrating about GC2 was I would spend time designing cool ships then play the game zoomed out with all ships as icons because playing as a harpy made commanding the empire easier. I'm finding I do the same thing with Sins. Is there a cure for this condition, or must I continue to suffer with it?

Watching the epic space battles in a Sims game zoomed up close is fun, but I can't enjoy it as much mid game, when the battles are biggest, best, and mean the most because I'm afraid something bad will happen while I micro-observe the action. End game, when its safe, it leaves me with sort of an empty, Ming-the-Merciless-Like feeling watching a couple of construction frigates and a colony ship defend a dead asteroid against a galaxy-sized invasion force. I suppose I could save, watch, then go back if the results were bad, but...

Anyone else have the same issue, and how do you deal with that?

Watch replay's i guess, there are some nice replays out there, and you can change the speed setting, or pause in a big battle.

I think this is a good idea...

Which leaves him unable to "enjoy" the fine graphics.

Personally, if you really want to enjoy the graphics, just go ahead and do it in replay mode -- if your watching them mid-game, odds are there is something going on elsewhere that you need to be controlling.

I think part of the problem is that I often feel ships switch to icon-form too quickly. This is especially true for fighters and bombers, where reasonable zooms for fleet-size command turn the entire force into icons.

I will go so far as to agree that zoom icon information (what a horrid locution!) need to be pulled out of the individual unit files, and made available to the player in options somewhere. That said, a lot of units get too small to see right around the current zoom level anyway.

too true, Icons need to be relevant when I'm extremely far out, we're talking 1/2-the full gravity well is in my screen, not when I'm focusing on my marza and 20 or so fighter icons go whizzing by

and the icon switch doesnt work for this either, because when I zoom out to give orders I cant see bollox.
