Sins Beta 4 Technical Feedback - *POST HERE*

And so it begins....again.

This thread is for technical feedback for Sins of a Solar Empire Beta 4. 

Please reply to this post if you'd like to make: a bug report, let us know about a compatibility issue, graphics issues, performance reports, etc. (i.e., technical stuff).

Before making a report, please be aware that the minimum system requirements for Beta 4 are:

  • Windows XP SP2 / Vista
  • 1.8 GHz Processor
  • 512 MB RAM (1 GB RAM for Vista)
  • 128 MB 3D DirectX Video Card
  • DirectX 9.0c
  • LAN or Broadband Internet Connection for Multiplayer

IMPORTANT:  When making a post about a bug, be certain to include - your system specs, a description of the bug you encountered, what you were doing when the bug occurred (how to reproduce it), and if it was reproducible or not.  We won't be able to make changes to the game without detailed information.

If you encounter a crash, Sins should automatically generate a minidump file. Please send the generated exception and a DirectX diag report to support(at)ironcladgames(dot)com along with a detailed description as outlined above. Minidump files are located in (please note these directories are hidden by Windows):

XP: C:\Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire
Vista: C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Ironclad Games\Sins of a Solar Empire\

I've had that before -- I think its when your at a culture lock, instead of staying constant it goes back/forth just a little bit as time passes, rather than staying locked in stone.

If you have a fleet of ships and you tell them to attack a target, as soon as the target is destroyed, the ships immediately stop. They stop phase jumping to the destination and will be between planetoids, they then try to drive at sub-light speeds directly to wherever you tell them (very slowly).

There are also issues with the network game hosting aspect. We tried over dozen games today and the first game I hosted everyone could see. However any subsequent games could not be seen. The solution was for me to log out and back in before the game list would update to reflect the new game.

If the flying-out-of-gravwell-to-attack-civvie-ships bug hasn't been fixed yet, I did some testing when I came across it. If it has, then disregard this. :P

Embargo seems to be a great way of causing it: merchants from the current system will sometimes try to leave (maybe if they're already at the phase-jump part of the gravity well? I'll need to test further). There was at least one incidence of a merchant from another system trying to fly through normal space to get to the embargoed system, too.

I'm still having issues with fleet jumps. Maybe it is just me but I think the mechanics could use some tweaks. For example if I select many ships in one GW and they happen to be scattered all over the GW I think they should all wait until the last selected ship gets into the group before trying to jump. Right now I think it is a time based thing given some of the horrible jumps I have had.

ive been playing a few maps and noticed that on some systems you can not see any of the structures nor ships, you either have to zoom in to them all the way or you dont know where they are. its like a fog of war type of effect, but you cant even see your own ships, and sometimes if you look at the system off to the left or right of your screen instead of directly centered. i have no idea why its happening, and i also get this wierd reports that i just hit skip all and get playing, its not my system, i have a new laptop fully loaded. whats up with this?

I've never that particular error before, and I just got it in my game. Probably fixed, but weird. (Its your standard culture type error notice -- but different message!)

First stretch of beta 4 and the Vasari for me, so unknown how big of a glitch nor if reproducible. Essentially I built my 1st Anorak (sp?) capital and want to have fun stopping others with the phase-out stunner thing ability. When manually casting on comps Donuv(?), it propelled the Donuv out of the well almost half-way to the next planet. Then to top it off, my fleet chased sub-light to the ship to continue the battle. THEN sublight back to original planet to THEN jump out.

I know somethin is wrong, but should the effected ship be shot like so?

Wow! Super God-like powers for your ship. Did the crew eat their Wheaties before battle?

Seriously that is way out of whack to be sure. A screenie would rock however.

That was a bug back in the beginning of beta 4 (I've seen it myself, it does rock), but I thought it was fixed... Do you have the latest version of sins?

Its odd, we keep seeing original B4 issues all of a sudden... Even after reinstalls. And after having reinstalled myself, I can tell you why!

Stardock Central has rolled back to the original B4 install for some reason!

Well I am sure I d/l the latest version since I just installed it again last week. So unless I opted to get an older version I'm up to date. I don't have any screens now, but I may have a save or a reply, I'm not sure as I'm not on my system which has sins. If an when I do get a screen shot, saved game file, reply, etc... how do I post here or should I just send it to the support e-mail?

In any event, yeah, for that one game I thought the ship was even crazier then the horror stories read about multi (was it?) and his phasing of multiple caps simultaneously.

Doesn't help -- it still "thinks" its the right version for some reason. I think its just the data files, not the executable (since I can go for a while before getting a desync error, instead of instantly)

This isn't possible as the server doesn't keep old files (it always has the latest, which is why people can't ever download old versions).

That's the error I got last night. The game would freeze and it took a while for this error screen to appear but if I was patient it would show up and then it would skip these errors going forward. The planet description would show the error string in red when you hovered your cursor over the planet.

I'm glad its just not me.

It is fixed for their internal version as I understand things. They simply have decided not to release ant further updates for the community until the game goes public. Why this is so I can only speculate.

The simply argument would be that any further releases would be to close to a final product for their liking and they are worried about a product leak and a loss of release "thunder" and sales as a result. This position would be justified since a copy of the beta has already been found on some torrent sites. I have personally it to boot.

There may also be contractual reasons or obligations as well - food for thought.
