Battles around the sun :(

A lot of the time, I fight around the sun, seeing as its the entry point to my system, its the best spot to contain any invasion.

However, as the sun is in the middle..it has made movement and fighting in that system akward.

I suggest moving the sun beneath the plane somewhere to give us more fighting space...in addition ships use aaaaaaaaaages forming up for warp around the sun too...AI gets stuck there all the time.

Solve this easy imho by either reducing sun size or moving it out of combat zone.

That would sort of defeat the whole point of having a sun It'd be like moving a planet out of a grav well, since ships have to go around planets also.. what's the point, then?

I'm clearly with Annatar on this one.

Hell.. if anything I think the size of the sun needs to be increased! At the moment it's way off scale. The sun is how many times the size of the Earth? Imo the sun shouldn't be the same size as any of the planets.. that thing is massive beyond comprehension!

I haven't had to fight much around suns, since the AI is so pitiful.

But....

I think the slow movement and inability to build defenses add a lot of character to it as an entry point. It seems to me a good way to defend a sun would be with carriers popping in from nearby systems rather than with the usual horde of frigates and cap ships.

Pleeez though, don't make suns bigger. Getting around 'em to go to a new system is already painful enough.

Well duh, everything is off scale. But, use the ZXC keys and you'll notice the sun is (much) larger than planets, if not as large as it should be. Thanks to the zoom, the sun's grav well appears deceptively small -- the tactical grid, rather than being locked to individual units, is locked to the size of the grav well its in. I. e. you get x by y squares for a grav well, no matter how large it is. As such, you really need to use the "set" zoom keys of z x and c to get a feel for its size.

Well if you want to discuss realism..

I'm sure we can all say that even with the sun as it is now, its VERY far away from the actual combat..

It's not like we're fighting 10 meters off the corona.. So the scale of the sun could be explained by how far the actual fighting is from the sun.

Having the battlefield a bit more clear sounds like more fun to me..but hey maybe make it an option...CERTAINLY it will benefit the AI who struggles like all hell in there.

Everyone always says that

You beat me to it Ron Someone posted once that if the devs would everything we said "make it an option", the game would have literally hundreds of different toggles.

And I'm sure if you offer to pay their salaries for an extra year, along with all the logistical/manufacturing costs, they'll have time (and the desire) to put it all in

Options never hurt a game, lack of however has.

The trouble with options is that first, it doesn't take any less effort than making it permanently on. In fact, it takes a lot more than just adding a toggle--BOTH options have to be balance-tested, debugged, etc. And when you start adding options for every game mechanic you can think of, it gets messy very quickly (Options X Y and Z all on and all off may be ok, but what about X-Y on, Z off, or X off, Y-Z on, etc).

As a matter of principle I'm always for options. Especially those that have significant game play ramifications. With that said I like to temper that position with concern for to many options in the same general game mechanic due to the extra complexity and stress caused for the developers code wise on the back end.

On the topic at hand, I would like to see the suns increased about 15% more in size. I think that would give the visual scale, extra maneuverability room and depth of play for the area that feels somewhat short right now - at least to me.

You mean both the stars AND the gravity wells should be increased by 15%, right? I would like that as well.

This is slightly off topic but I think it would look better if the star looked more like a lightsource (as opposed to seeing so much detail in its surface) when you are looking at it from any of its surrounding planets.

It would be nice in a way, but then I also like not being blinded when I look at it

Yes. In fact I think the wells could use a 25% increase truth be told. But at a minimum 15% for sure.

An similar effect to Eve Online Stars should be perfect! Flying near a star in Eve is a wonderful experience... really! (I personally dislike the strange color stars une Sins...but the rest of the game kicks asses!)
