Res Change problems.

Choose a res your monitor can't handle and you have to go hacking settings files.

I reported this in one of the feedback threads for Beta 3, but I don't think it was picked up. Maybe it needs a thread on it's own.

The problem is simple, if you pick a res/refresh rate that your monitor can't handle (but your video card can) you get stuck with a black screen, with no way of reverting in-game. You have to go and edit your user.settings file.

The solution is one of the usual 'Click here in 15 seconds or I change back to the previous res' dialog boxes.

This is something we're aware of and are trying to resolve with the movies themselves. Not sure if you'll get the fix during the beta, however.

Interesting... I'm not sure if thats a case of mis-reading the problem, or having a (very) innovative solution in the wings...

OK. Go re-read it and reply

Well, the obvious solution would be for us to grab the supported settings from Windows and use those in-game.

Yes, that'd be an obvious solution. Edit: But is it a good one?

Yes? Windows only displays resolutions supported by your monitor, so using that list eliminates this problem altogether.

*IF* you actually have the right monitor driver installed (No, Generic PnP Monitor is not the most popular brand ever), which most people don't.

Hrm, both of the LCDs I've used over the last few years were properly recognized by both XP and Vista and both only display supported resolutions, I never had to install drivers for them.

I think the "confirm you can see this" button is fairly obvious as well.

And doesn't rely on windows getting its act together, which is (almost) always a plus.
