David Webber: in death ground

Have anyone read a book by David Webber called "In the Death Gound"? It has some of the best space battles I have ever read. As I was playing the beta I could not help but find similarities: fighers/bombers/corvets/capital ships/ etc. I just wish this game had a smililar michanics for combat as in the book:

- misiles are divided into two categoris: long range and short range
- beam weapons are short range weapons only
- each ship has a special purpouse: carrier, beam, misile, etc.
- formations matter
- fog of war
- fighters can attack at close range only
- fighters need to be re-armed for additional strikes

I am not sure if these ideas are implementable, but it would be quite nice to "play the book". Also if you have not read it AND like military sci-fi (ala starship troopers) I would strongly recomend you give it a shot.

It is probably too late in the game's development cycle to make most of these changes. The changes in your list that could be made most likely won't be because it sounds like they all tie in together and would require a lot of rebalancing.

But, with the upcoming Forge Tools with the game's release, I spect most/all of this you'll be able to mod

With the exception of fog of war, Formations matter (aka: more than they do now...) and fighters needing to refuel/rearm, they should be doable. Resupply doesn't really exist in the game engine (though its possible to use antimatter as a workaround...) so that wouldn't be doable. Other stuff -- like the jump-capable missile pods -- I don't see happening, except maybe as a capship ability (and I'm not sure thats doable, depends on how much is in the engine, and what isn't...)
