Fighters + Hold Position = looks stupid and possibly more effective than standard behaviour ?

Well, I don't know if this is expected behaviour or a known bug, but last night we played a 8 player FFA game where paradoxnt put his fighters on hold position and used manual targetting to move them around. Now fighters don't move around at all when they hold position, which makes them look like some kind of mini turrets AND they probably fire more often, because they are out of range less often when their weapon cooldown is over.

Here is the replay of the game:

Another problem with that game was that it crashed at the end. =/

Because of the not so intelligent ship AI, most of us use hold position, and micro like hell to better control our ships. This is being addressed as i type so hopefully we wont have to resort to doing this all the time in the final release.

more AI to fix I guess...

It isn't that you get more fire rate or anything like that because the fighters have a long enough cooldown on their weapons to swing around for the next shot.

It is just that I like to manually micro everything during battle. Basically, the tactical AI isn't all that impressive for me.

Also, I wanted to say congrats on your holding off for so long against far heavier firepower. I like how you decided to preserve your fleet instead of trying to do a hopeless defense. I get that you were hoping our alliance would fall apart and you would be able to stage a come back.

Anyway, I was impressed with your resiliance and good grasp of the bigger strategic view.

Minidump?

The minidump ( WWW Link) is from watching the recorded game. In the actual game Sins didn't crash for me, but the game stopped possibly because *someone* got the culture string missing pop-up/pop-under (:/) and didn't notice it.

And damn, so far I thought Sins would upload the minidumps by itself after you get the popup asking about sending it to the devs. Now I have a few more dumps from the last week, but I can't remember the circumstances under which the game crashed for them. Would it still help to upload or e-mail them without a bug report ?

@paradoxnt + Major Stress: It's just a feeling that the fighters are more effective when on hold position, atleast against other fighters and bombers. Can't really test it with just 1 computer. But seeing those fighters sit there statically just looked wrong.

Oh and thanks ;) Have to say it was a bit hopeless fighting 1vs2 + the third guy and the pirates too. I was a bit surprised that the terran planet didn't flip after my culture had already spread through it and your own broadcast centers were not up yet.

they are more effective as they dont waste time swinging around, its just that you cannot specify their target (or else they start swining) and that they must be manually moved to positions. If the battle shifts too far you have to move them again.

Its a behavoir that should probablly be taken away, just remove the Hold Stance for fighters/bombers.
