Does this game come across as mean spirited or sadistic? I didn't play the game, but I know a few people not happy with the game about it

No... it was a fun game. Deliberately twisted outlook on the part of the GLaDOS character, but mostly just poking fun at certain outlooks / ideas / characterizations.
