Why don't the ships move (continuously) during combat?

Why don't the ships move (continuously) during combat?

^ topic. You would think they would attempt some sort of evasive maneuvers.

Overall beta 4 is great. This is the one thing that really bugged me.

My theory is that the ships are just so massive that hundreds of them moving means theyd crash into one another, and then thered be a huge amount of clipping and smashing and itd be awful

I have come to realize (after also being dismayed initially about sitting ships) that it is a scale issue, not a mobility issue

Ok so lets say this. At first you admit you are initially dismayed. I too am dismayed. Others are also dismayed.

However you realise its "a scale issue" . And im assuming you are no longer dismayed right? maybe because of the scale issue, not to clear , but assume so

I just wonder how many people are going to think this way?. Im more in the crowd of "yea I totally understand but still lol......".

Well...I would say that the dismay moved from "these ships aren't moving" to "these ships need to be bigger". I would say the former bothered me more though, once I accepted that they should in hact not be moving but merely are scaled differently than I am accustomed to, it seemed less of a deal. But I am concerned how that will be reflected in the opinions of a wide audience that will not have the luxury of stardock's adaquate beta forum explanations.

bingo! totally agree with this concern. Even with a sound explanation or something based on proper physics , its only going to be heard by some and accepted by even less.

Its a small thing amongst some the awesome graphics , 2d icons , explosions , textures , race variation etc , but its like a pebble in a shoe.

As I have said, repeatedly in this thread now, the frigates move more in the final version. ;)

Maybe they should fix this using the intro somehow... I remember in GC or GC2 (don't remember which) you'd start out zoomed-in on a worker doing some maintenance, then zoom out slowly until you realized that thing was f'in huge.

Hmm, the larger ships gain advantages in where the position themself, not how they move, as im pretty sure the technology in the SOASE world is pretty capable of hitting large ship at the distance they are fighting in and at the speed they travel in ;p . Overall, I think it is much better to fight the battles out chess-like with ships this size, making the game more immersing. Overall, I dont think I see the point in ships constantly moving, unless ordered to take a better position in order to execute the current "battleplan", though it would probally be fun too see 14 Vs 8 frigates circling around each other in confusion, as a battle tactic to force earlier retreatment or to hinder retreatment at all, and maybe even as a tool/order to be able to hit the enemy player battle-moral this way. :p
