Idea Playable Pirate Factions

Don't know how this will be received, but I for one would like to also have the option as playing as Pirates. I know it won't be as dynamic as building a true galactic power. But it would be interesting to play as the guys whose purpose is to leach off the bigger powers while trying to stay out the way, trying to build up a Pirate Kingdom. I want to hear if anyone else has anything to contribute to this idea. All posts welcome.

Also , to make sure this isn't a completely wasted idea, maybe emphasis should be put into the game play of Pirate Factions. Since I imagine Pirates would be a ragtag type faction, every ship would either be salvaged or hijacked. And also tech and weaponry would probably have to be bought, stolen, or salvaged.

So since they arn't a planet specific faction, more emphasis should be put into their nomadic lifestyle. Like maybe support ships to convert ships into pirate vessels. Tell me what you think about this.

il see what i can do for you then beware im not gona get you any research and i duno about getting you some cappital class ships but otherwise shouldent be hard to get the faction done everything else seems to be there
il get back to you tommorow to tell you what i can do

But I also think they should be able to flip their ways on a whim, by maybe being able to colonize a planet or build a base of operations in a ship or an asteroid. Hence being able to create a pirate kingdom. I don't know, but I love playing around with this idea.

Edit: Saw your reply Prez. Thanks for considering this.

well by the looks its already set up to use the tec buildings and caps so im gona go and maby make pirate modified cap ships after a while you can get what is there as a playable race by going into your gameinfo and going down to PlayerPirate.entity and setting the isplayable to TRUE im getting a bug from just doing that though where no starting stuff shows up (no builder no factories only a planet where i cant do anything) if you get that tell me and il post the fix which i am hunting down
il because all i had to do was modify one word (and squish this bloody bug) will make it a bit different (i was expecting to have to hunt down a whole heap of values for the modules and such)
and of course i would consider it i have the skills to do such a thing and i think of myself as being a helpfull guy ,I'd like to help the community as im sure it will help me

Edit: ok got it working somewhat still no spaned stuff at the begining but the builder autospawns after a while im gona make some mix and match vasari/tec ships to shw their pirate nature (vasari ships with tec guns and such things) im thinking along the lines of pirates dont know how to fix up vasari weaponry so just fittied the hull with the more common and fixable tec weapons and what was left of the vas weapons and then upgraded engines and what not
anyway the devs where nice enough to make icons for all the ships which saves me some kitbash style trouble still trying to work out the beginging ships and modules anyone feel like enlightening me to what i may have missed? is it just that they cant use other races stuff or does the computer just hate me?

I... would be leery about this angle.

Right now pirates and piracy are mechanics of variety and strategic betrayal. If you make them a playable faction, you then change them ("gotta be balanced!"), which would irrevocably alter their mechanical role.

I would rather see more variety in the A.I. role that they play... maybe 1 in 100 games they decide to venture forth and expand their own domains. Still though, they`d remain a flavouring element to the main game goings-on.

mhm i agree they shouldent be changed in the full game but im a modder i mod things so im gona put pirates in for no particular reason oher than seeing what i can do for the next 27 days 16 hours and 5 minutes so if you dont like it dont do it  ;) anyway anyone (dev mabye?) feel like enightining me on why nothing other than my homeplanet shows up in th begining?

How about this. When a player is defeated he can continue the game as a pirate. You have a fleet cap of maybe 100 with low to medium ships that respawn after awhile that the player can control and use them them to ruin everyone's economy. Hey its better then being in some kind of spectator mode after you are defeated.

Mobile shipyards might be needed and the addition of more dead space sectors to jump to(nebula, asteroid fields with out a colonizable asteroid, Gas Giants, and if possible simple dead space(and astroids to build mining facilities). Oh and mobile mining facilities(perhaps a deployable option?).

I thought the point of defeat was for the player to actually be defeated, and out of the game.

Thought an ability for frigates "Cannibalize" the ability gives back(pending on amount repaired and size of ship) some resources(left overs if target ship is fully repaired with a fraction of the frigates cost) and repairs Hull HP and antimatter reserves at the expense of the frigate.

Lol I can see this being more annoying for the surviving players then fun for the defeated.

Heh, maybe give the dead players a single pirate cap ship to cruise around with, would cause only minor trouble and mostly be forced to support CPU pirate raids to survive. But even then I wonder if it is worth the effort to implement.

More plausible though is my wish that so long as anyone on your team still had a planet you were allowed to keep playing (with your remaining ships only). It would let you control the now irreplaceable remnants of your forces in joint attacks still.
