Units and their Environment

At the end of my last post I was sad to hear that the units' position in their environment has no effect on the units. The question was:

"Do the units gain advantages/disadvantages by using the environment around them?

Example: A capitol ship(CP) powers down and hides behind a moon. Several smaller enemy ships attempt to attack a defensive structure on the other side of the moon. The CP powers up, the smaller enemy ships detect it but have time to take cover or flee before the CP can complete its power up process. The enemy player doesnt bother to move the smaller ships and the CP powers up and destroyes the enemy ships and saves the defensive structure by using the moon as a trap."

Something that worked great for Company of Heroes and always adds interesting effects to any RTS game are environmental positioning for units.

Maybe this is something the dev team should think about for future upgrades and/or expansions.

I didn't read that particular post - but in the context you present it, that is incorrect information. Your position in the environment has a very signficant effect on units. Asteroid feilds, magnetic clouds, plasma storms, worm holes, gas giants all have unique gameplay effects that can alter your strategy dramatically! Varying grav well sizes, map layouts, artifacts, neutral resource asteroids, pirate planet position, sensors, etc...only exaggerate these differences :)

it would be cool... sadly not in the game

hell to the yes.  :CONGRAT:  The game enviroment isn't "interactive" in that you hide in it, but asteriods are GREAT choke points when they have a porous core, Dense cores create a larger grav well (takes longer so you can kill that fleeing cap ship) Gas Giants lend splash damage from large explosions, magnetic clouds prevent antimatter abilities, and plasma storms ground fighters!

As to wormholes.... It has been said that once you research up the tech tree to safly travel through them then you can instantainious travel between too points.

Thats to clarify to all of you GUESTS that need to BUY this AMAZING game. :p

I SOOO want the next patch! :HOT:

Once again, this game sounds great!

Another question for those who might know...

Can you set up defenses directly on the planets or moons?

Example: Like in Star Wars(The Empire Strikes Back) where you set up an Ion Cannon to fire on enemy ships from the planet. Maybe even a Shield Generator that can protect orbiting defensive structures.

There are not defenses that you set up on the planet, however the planets can get upgrades to improve thier infrastructure making them harder to wipe out.

you cannot place structures directly on planets, but you do have shields to protect your worlds... i think...

and there are no moons...

:NOTSURE: <--- sad but not too sad face

The TEC can build a planetary shield, the Vasari can't. THey haven't released the advent to the public yet, so... ./shrug

didnt we have gravitational pull once? like moving towards a planet is faster than away from it. I would call that an environmental effect.
