Conquering planets

Hey folks! Been keeping an eye on this game for a while now, and I like what I see thus far.

I do have one question, however: How does one actually take over planets? Do you simply have to destroy the defender's ships along with any orbital defenses the planet may have? How do planets change ownership, exactly?

You bombard the planet's infrastructure, and then you can move in and colonize it as if it had been empty before.

Unless, that is, there's culture in play.

Are neutralizing a planet either by culture or warfare you send down colonists, administrators, government etc from colony ships to assume control.
