Total Machine Lock-up

Not sure if this is the place to report this, but I played two separate games last night and both games froze up on me after about half an hour of play. And I mean FROZEN, my entire PC became unresponsive and I had to power it off the hard way.

I'm running an ASUS M2N mobo w/ AM2 64 x2 4600, 2GB DDR800 RAM, 8800 GTX, and a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 card. I didn't seen any events in the Event Log, so I'm presuming the problem was with the game specifically, but I wasn't sure if there was any log I could refer to in the games install folder?

If needed, I can get a dxdiag.txt of my system. My drivers are all up to date (well, my video driver is the latest WHQL certified from 12/20/07). I'm going to get back in and try again.

Wow... that said, our game is 3 months behind their internal codebase, which has has significant renovation. No way to tell if the final is going to have the same issue except to hand it out.

That is really odd. There has not been any system killer reports that I can think of at all in a very long time.

Are the drivers for the Audigy 2 functioning correctly? I remember when I was using an Audigy 2 it caused problem after problem.

Also, any CPU or GPU overclocks?

Hi Scott, sorry about your problems.

Were you running the latest version of beta 4 from Stardock Central? There are two known lock ups in beta 4 that have been long since fixed for retail and only happened in the rarest of cases. But just to be sure they are the same ones can you check to see if any dump files got placed in the dump folder of one of these folders:

Vista:
C:\Users\username\

XP:
C:\Documents and Settings\username\

If there are any there, please send them to us, thanks.

Also, try playing in windowed mode, enabling logging, or any of the other variety of things listed here:

It might be your graphics card. Does it freeze and you see some pink and green pixels, and then your monitor screen shuts off? I've been having that with my 8800 nvidia card and on the nvidia forums there seems to be a lot of others experiencing the same thing.

Thanks for all the quick replys, I just played a game with no problems, and I hadn't run into this before either, so I'm thinking it was what Blair indicated, which only happened rarely.

I hadn't had any problem playing anything else, and until recently I'd been playing NWN Mask of the Betrayer, BioShock, Crysis, and Gears of War on and off for a month with the exact same drivers/set up with no problems, so I don't think it's the rig. It's probably the long since resolved freeze bugs bitting me. No worries, just thought I'd mention it, it *is* a beta, after all. ;)
