Maxkmum # of ships?

Just curious, what is the largest number of ships an empire can have? What about a given fleet in a given gravity well?

Depends... how much memory you got? ;)

I have seen it modded to take an insane amount of ships taht would bring any and all computers to their knees.

Outside of mods, the default cap is 2000 fleet points worth of ships, which would translate to about 300-400 or so depending on what you focus on (different ships take various amount of fleet points to build). There's no limit to how many ships can be in a grav well (unlike EaW).

The engine isn't hard coded to limit the number of ships, so you can change the fleet point cap with mods however you like.

Very cool. Thanks. 2GB RAM, btw. :)

Its not dependent on system memory based on my beta4 tests, its the game engine thats the limiting factor.

I have 8GB RAM btw and SoaSE has never used more than 1.2GB even with 25,000 ships.

Its probably more accurate to say that the game engine scales to 400 ships per player, it can display a hell of a load more but as my 3yr old daughter would say 'tiz not workin?'

It's not really the game engine either. It's the fact that every single ship has an AI script running, and is rendered in one way, shape, or form by the GPU.

That doesn't ring true either cos when I tested it my GPU wasn't overly stressed.

In my opinion the game engine can't handle it, but in the same breath (before any one starts posting 'over dramatic bullsh*t'), its not designed to either... The game engine runs very well thank you very much within the tolerance set and thats a good thing for all of us. We don't need 25,000 units displayed at once it was just a test it does not ditract in any way from the quality of the game I only bring it up cos the question was about challenging the limits and few beta testers have done that.

@aldarian : Yes you are quite right and these are the conditions & tests I am talking about.

You are welcome to try yourself, but trust me you could have a Tri/Quad Nvidia 8800 Ultra and it would make next to bugger all difference on the result other than your room being more than a tad warmer  :)

Of course I am figuring that this is all based on the performance of the betas? Which I would figure were not coded to be as fast as they could be. I expect the retail version should at least handle the load better. So there might be more ships possible then again, we will have to wait and see.

This reminds me of some discussions over at the GalCiv2 boards. 8gig of RAM (assuming you mean physical RAM, not virtual) don't mean anything unless you are running a 64-bit OS AND the game engine is compiled with the appropriate flags to use large memory addresses.

I have to wait for the official release of SINS, but I'd bet that this is essentially the same issue.

:SURPRISED: I'll have you no that my computer heats up the room it is in by 5 degree's C
From room temp, to 30 degree's after 3 hours of Crysis gaming haha. But I suppose being in a cupboard doesnt help :NOTSURE:

Thats really good, Sins use's upto 2GB ram for me, and im limited to 1.5 of actual ram, Then my Harddrive gets raped because it use's page file (Stupid Microsoft!)
Also, say someone stupid enough like myself wanted to raise my room temp by a further 5 degree's, how would he go about raising the ships cap?

I wonder how many ships you could produce with 400 planets and the darkfleet upgrade for the phase gates in every one of those planets...

If you get 3 ships every time it generates them thats 1,200 per cycle of the ability.
