do it. do it now. the 45nm core 2s are amazing. cool, energy efficient, fast, and cheaper than my 65nm, which I got in november. it's not fair, I tell you!

I'd prefer quad over dual <3

LOL!!! Out of stock till Feb 11 :SNIFF!:

the new 45nm duals are much better processors than the equivalent quad. Wonder when they'll come out with a 45nm quad that isn't a xeon...

The antec 900 is a nice case, the only is the front two 120 mm fans are pretty bright. thinkin bout getting two more and trading those out as it stays in the room i sleep in. also i think putting a fan controller on the case would be nice too as you can control the fan speeds but you can only do it from inside the case. keeps everything really cool no matter how much i have things OC'd inside. the only thing i had problem with was cable management as some things were VERY far from eachother but with a little imagination it all worked out.
Definately go with the 4 gigs of ram, I got 2 gigs of OCZ d9 micron, overclocks from stock 800 to round 1000-1100 without any problems at all just a little up in voltage. would like to have 2 more for vista 64. Big time help in editing movies and photos etc. not so much for gaming.
I would ponder getting the 64 bit ultimate if yer gonna go with VISTA. I could tell a difference between the 32 and 64 but thats just me. i mean hell yer already spending 1600 whats another 100?
Go with EVGA for the video card and stick with the GT. save money and you wont notice a performance difference. plus you can upgrade with there program for just the difference in price when they release the 9 series.
Don't know much bout intel as i use ASUS crosshair with a amd 6000 ocd 3.3 and stable. got that board for the upgrade to am2+ when they get all the kinks worked out after the first gen quad chips. I do know quad over dual is not that great YET just because programmers haven't started writing for 4 cores as they just started writing for 2 cores ie Gal CIv 2 and SupCom etc. so thats just up to you on how much you want to spend.
Looks like a system to be jealous of though for sure....beats mine out :(

wow none of my paragraph spaces got put it lol never noticed that before....sorry for the blob of white letters lol
Reply #32 Top
I can tell you that's an awesome system, because I just built an almost identical computer. The only differences are the PSU, mobo, and hard drives, and this thing flies. Loads sins maps in about 2 seconds or so and is smooth as glass with all current settings cranked, runs crysis smooth on high, and lots of other fun stuff. Just wish I had the 45nm version of the processor (:(. Oh, and I got a different case, but I hear really good things about the Antec 900.

MeatOshield... It was fine and easy to read even without the spaces.

For Windows to read all 4GB of RAM you need to get the 64-bit version of Vista or XP. Your 512MB of Video Card memory is also counted the total system memory under 32-bit operating systems, so you'll be losing out on a lot of RAM if you stick with 32-bit (Windwos usually sees around 3.2GB total, 512MB of which would be your Video Card).

Your PSU can either be upgraded or downgraded. If you never plan on adding a second GT or GTS (I'd also say get the GT over the GTS) then you can downgrade to something like the Corsair 520W PSU. If you do plan on adding a second vid card to go SLI, you'll want a quality power supply. OCZ makes good memory, their power supplies do have some weak areas though. I'd recommend you looking into the Antec 650W NeoBlue and Corsair 620W to see what sort of % load it would work at under SLI with GT's, then work your way up from there. One of the best and easiest to use PSU's on the market IMO is the PC Power and Cooling 750W (comes in 3 colours in case you look it up and get confused).

Speaking of SLI, if you DONT plan on using two video cards then I would get a different motherboard. Really the only reason to get an nVidia board to because you want to run SLI. Otherwise, they just don't have the same level of driver support and stability as the Intel chipsets, such as the X38 or P35.

As for Dual Core (E8400) vs Quad Core (Q6600), I would say for you the choice is the Q6600 since you're into video editing. The Q6600 is ridiculously easy to overclock to 3.0Ghz (it only requires one change in BIOS, just upping the FSB from 266 to 333). An E8400 at 3.8 or 4.0Ghz won't give you a performance increase over a Q6600 at 3.0Ghz with only one video card - that will be your bottleneck, not the processor. And actually, when games in a year or two start being able to take advantage of all four cores it will be like your Q6600 is getting a free upgrade since it'll perform so much better (See SupCom or Alan Wake dual core vs quad core). Not to mention the sparce availability of the E8400, which is the only dual core I would recommend right now.

Good luck with the new system!

Let me say that if your going to pay a lot of money for a keyboard, a G15 is a very nice piece of equipment, especially the "cut down" re-released version.
is the listing of your ram wrong? because $230 is more than twice a rational price for four gigs. also, even at newegg's currnet prices, the a-data ram is overpriced compared to others, such as the G.skill i recommended earlier, which has lower latency for a lower price unless you plan to overclock it, in which case mushkin's product is probably the best bet.
The $230 was for the E8400 chip. The memory was $129 and at the time I selected it there was 2 discounts making it about $89 but now only one mail in discount available making it $109. He who hesitates..... :(

I will check out that other memory stick you listed.

I called this morning to check to see if my computer was ready but there was an issue that my 2nd mem stick wasn't being read. Bad stick? Bad board? Nope Vista 64 bug. They DL a quick fix and all is good. The wife brought home the new computer (heavy sucker) and started up. Hooked up and off I went. DL star Trek wallpaer, installed Firefox and installed Pacific Storm: Allies cranked to the max. Not 1 single problem with software even with my 8800 card. I only played about 10 minutes because I needed sleep before I went to work. Ummmm were is the shutdown button???...........:aarrgghh: This is going to take some time to learn everything. I also almost forgot a new monitor since the kids are getting the old system so I picked up a HannsG - 27.5" Widescreen Flat-Panel TFT-LCD Monitor. Looks freaking awesome! but doesn't fit the computer desk!!

Of course Sins get put on first thing in the morning when I get home from work.

Oh and when I went into my computer it only showed 1 harddrive. Great, now I have to call the store in teh morning :(

DDR3 is a huge waste as of now, seeing as it costs more than 3 times as much for roughly equivalent performance.
End of quote

ROFL, so true. The best way to beat the system is get a system that's 2 notches behind, cheaper.

A Quad processor is just overkill for games unless you do video editing, recording, audio processing and rendering. But as inexpensive as they are they are a good idea, just in case you need the power.

I was looking at that and the keyboard but dropped them and used the money elsewhere.

WHOA WHOA WHOA!!! NERF THE MOBO MAN! There's plenty of really good Mobo's out there for half the price. You could funnel that saved money into a Much better processor instead. Gigabyte and some Biostar mobo's are cheap and fuckign amazing. Both my latest CPU's used them and they never gaveme any problems, never.
