Anybody Old enough to remember Pong?

Anybody Old enough to remember Pong?

I remember I was six years old and all I wanted in the world was an Atari and Commodore 64! I was one of those A.D.D. kids that was fed ridalin by the truck load so I guess my father finally caved in and got me an Atari 2600 for my birthday, hoping it would keep me occupied and give him some peace. Soon of course came Space Invaders, Missile Command, etc. Pac Man ruined my life and Nintendo and Donkey Kong destroyed any hopes of becoming a normal, well adjusted person. Thanks DAD! I dont think I've been as wildly excited about a game since pong, except maybe for this one.  :LOL:

Yeah, I owned Tele-pong which came out before the 2600 VCS. That brings back allot of memories although the C64 and Amiga where my favorites and still are. Elite (which came with a novella and star map. why don't they do stuff like this anymore), Cannon Fodder, Alien Breed and many others although Elite is still one of my all time favorites.

I had a "Telstar" which was basically a Pong console (LOL here's a picture of it I just found: TELSTAR ). Keep in mind that this console had a couple of games built-in, it was long before systems that could use multiple games like the atari or Intellivision (I loved "Utopia" for Intellivision).

I also loved "Choplifter" for the Apple IIe and "MoonPatrol"

Man I haven't thought about these games for around 25 years lol

LOL check out how amazingly different the Tennis, Hockey and Handball settings are on the Telstar! It's all just pong (for those who don't remember, tennis is true pong)

A couple months ago ARS did a multi part feature story on the history of Amiga. It was very well done had some nice images and a video if I remember correctly. It is a must read for anyone that was truly a computer enthusiast a couple decades ago.

I remeber when they first put the huge PONG arcade game in the local Rollerskateing Arena... there were huge lines to play it.. and the following yr you could buy it for your own tv....

I remember that my Acorn Electron used to cause radio interference on the radio station my mum to at the time. She was never happy when she heard the sound of neeeyown-pew pew beeeep over the top of her programmes :D

I often miss them simpler days. The computer magazines I used to get never used to have the 'free game' on the cover but rather had the code printed inside for you to program into your comp. Happy days. That said, I'm glad they still don't do that these days!!!

The integrated circuit has come a long way. Moores law is soon upon us. I wonder if we will see quantum computing in our generation hit a consumer level. lol prolly not.

Friends had Pong, yes, remember it well. My first computer was an Apple II with 16K, audio tape to load programs. There was a primitive form of Star Trek bundled with it I remember. Later, got a used CP/M machine for serious work. How many remember CP/M?

First computer game I ever played was Spacewar on a PDP-1 in the forerunner of the MIT computer center in 1965. Got there at 10:00 pm on Friday night and at 3:30 am Saturday morning I finally got my five minutes to play!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g56ptrkY3E0 shows a Spacewar demo on a PDP-1. Spacewar took place in the gravity well of a star. There was even Hyperdrive!

Nearly 45 years later, Sins of a Solar Empire is in many ways just the old Spacewar, with gravity wells and hyperdrive, but enhanced beyond the wildest dreams of the original programmers.

Ah, my first computer; beige with orange. Don't know the brand but the joysticks (if you can call them that) had dials on top to move the enourmous bars with which you could bounce an enourmous square ball. The computer could only play tennis like games. After that some Atari model with space invaders, enduro and missile command. After that the C64, after that the Amiga 1200.

I defiantly remember pong! Does any one remember when Snake first came out on the Commodore 64? I remember that one very well because the book we got to program it had a misprint and I was told by my mom that it would have to wait.

One of the gals I used to go with had Pong when it was new (her dad was a doctor, so they had money). That was fall of '77, senior in high school.

What's PONG??
LOL - I remember Pong, we had 1. :d
I had 1 of the first "home" computers on the market = TANDY'S Color Computer.
It was 'state of the art'
- AWESOME 8 bit machine
- 16MB ram
- Tape Drive (cassette)
- hooked to any T.V.
- Basic (built in) language: cls, print(to screen - b4 affordable printers), save"", load"",
I had to buy 16MB of RAM (mail order) and soilder it to the back of the original 16MB RAM to upgrade it to a 32MB machine  :D
But anyway, here's a few home systems not mentioned:
* Colecovision
* Intellivision
* Astrovision
I also remember K-mart having these systems set up to play on - and waiting in line for hours just to play 1 game  :(

Not only do I remember Pong, I remember the Atari 2600!

I also had an Atari 800 Computer. It was just a Keyboard comptuer that hooked to your TV. You could get an optional External 5-1/4" Floppy drive....Wow!!!

Ahhh yes, the good old days of 8-bit computing :)
