Make Launch Day a Fun Day! READ THIS NOW!

Some tips and info!

On February 4, 2008 Sins of a Solar Empire will be released.  So how exactly is this going to proceed?

1) For those of you who pre-ordered:

If you pre-ordered the game but were NOT in the beta tomorrow afternoonish, Eastern Standard Time, the orders will begin to be processed. There are thousands of pre-orders to be processed so it will take some time.  Here's the insta-answer to this question "I haven't received my email yet!" answer: It hasn't been sent to you yet.  The pre-orders should complete being processed by 8pm EST. If you haven't received an email, then check your various spam filters. Otherwise, go HERE, type in your email and it should email you all info we have on you.

2) Get Stardock Central

To download the game, you will need Stardock Central. Your email will include instructions on creating a Stardock.net account (that's the account you use to logon to this website and post and such). If you want to get a head start, you can go here.

3) If you had a beta version

If you were one of the beta testers, first, thank you for your help! Sometime tomorrow afternoon v1.01 will appear on Stardock Central. That is the latest version. You will need to uninstall your existing beta first.

4) If you are buying it at a store

Once you install it and have it running, you will need to update to v1.01 to play on-line. Click on the "update game" button on the main menu and you'll be taken to where you can download the v1.01 patch. The patch is only 11 megs so don't worry.

5) If you are downloading the full game

We have leased some mega-super-duper high speed lines for the launch week. It should (better) download really REALLY fast regardless of how many people are buying.

6) If you are going to play multiplayer

If you are behind a router, you will need to make sure that port 6112 forwards to your machine. If you're doing a LAN game just make sure you have Windows Firewall either disabled or set up to allow Sins to work on it.  Also: Be aware that if you have a slow machine, that multiplayer runs at the speed of the slowest machine in the game.  So while the game will play fine on that 4 year old PC, you may want to think twice about joining a 10-person multiplayer game. It'll run but you won't be popular.

7) If you do have an older machine

Make sure you update your video drivers.  Don't do what I did with my ATI 9800 and assume that my drivers were fine. They weren't.  Same on audio drivers. Before you report garbled or stuttering or whatever sound, make sure they're up to date.

8) IF you run into a problem

Make sure you read the sticky threads before posting. Odds are, there is a common problem that pops up, we'll post a sticky post with a solution.

9) If you have a good machine

Go to the "Effects" option and turn up the graphics option. Make sure you get the full Sins experience graphically. The defaults are conservative.

10) If all else fails

Take a deep breath. Relax. We WILL take care of you.  Whether it be with your order, your PC, getting multiplayer to work, making sure you get the right package, etc. Don't worry.  [email protected] can take care of most problems.  On launch day, the fastest way to get support will be the forums because we're all hanging out here.  But remember to look up the sticky posts.

11) Waiting for your download to finish?  Try making some maps!

Today we also released the first piece of the Forge Tools package; Galaxy Forge.  It's a visual map editor for Sins that will let you craft your own custom maps.  Every map in the game was built using Galaxy Forge.  You can grab it from the Downloads Page.  And if you're having trouble figuring it out, be sure to check this Beginners Guide.

Good luck and have fun!

Yea, we apologize for the processing time.

We got a massive increase in the # of pre-orders over the weekend and as a result it's taking a lot longer to get through them all.

They're almost done. Probably another hour or two tops.

I probably won't get my review copy anytime soon so I'm stuck waiting, you guys are lucky! :(

That being said, this list by Frogboy (aka BW) reminds me of a similar thread he posted not long after GalCiv 2 shipped, where he listed an experience he had, via email tech support, with a customer who simply refused to upgrade his drivers, regardless of the fact that it was the specific solution to his problem AND regardless of the fact that this clueless gamer hadn't updated his (graphic) drives in quite a while.

Poor Brad, I'm surprised he hasn't snapped by now at the stress of dealing with the more unenlightened customers out there. LOL

Thanks for the post, Frogboy, this answers a lot of questions. Now let's just hope that everyone reads it!!

Well I have looked everywhere else perhaps I can get a reply here.

1. What is with all the messages about waiting for a serial? I ordered back in December and have a Serial. Do I have to wait for another serial number before I can download and use the retail release?!?!

2. When can I expect my CD to come in the mail? I will be truely upset if I have to stare at retail copies for weeks while waiting for my pre-ordered copy.

3. I paid $44.95 back in December for what is listed on my Receipt as "CD Pre-Order", now I see the digital download only is $44.95. Someone please tell me that I am still getting my packaged CD and book and such. If not I will be even more upset if I have fallen for some bait and switch crap!

Anyone?

Boy, you guys weren't kidding about the fast download speed!

I happen to be working in China and things here get a bit slow when it comes to download stuff outside the country. I'm getting speeds of up to 1012Kb/s for downloading SINS (12kb/s is what I can get sometimes)! All done in less than 15 minutes. :D It also helped that I downloaded when almost no one here is using the internet (6:30am, before going to work).

Just to be on the safe side, I hit the "download and archive" option first so that I can reinstall again if something nasty happens to my computer. Somehow I thought the SDC file would be in the GB range, not just to have 865Mb in size (the installed game is 1.50GB)...

Anyway, kudos for the smooth downloading of what I thought would be a greater exercise in patience. :)

When does the cd come in the mail, I live in Texas, or how long would it take at 56kbps?

why is the dl speed so bad (40ish kbs)?
i thought it was supposed to be good...

it makes launch day a sad day for me :SNIFF!:

What exactly do you mean by slower? Latency? FPS? Ship movement?

Has anyone tried the Galaxy Forge Downloads link lately? I've looked all over the site and keep getting direct to the downloads page but that only has screenshots and wall paper on it. No Forge Tools or Map Editor. What gives?

Thanks,
JO

Thanks, I'm certainly not seeing that - must be my version of IE or something - appreciate the direct link though.

I'd just like to point out to fellow beta testers that they need to uncheck 'show pre-release versions' on the SDC application to show the retail version of Sins to download.

Was waiting and waiting for the 0.9 beta version to update itself to the retail version so I could grab it... was probably sitting there ready for me to download for hours

1) Then you don't need to worry about it. Those customers who pre-ordered after Beta 4 closed only got confirmation numbers. You can use your existing serial to download the game.

2) Depends on where you live. They're being sent via USPS. If you're in the U.S., you should get it later this week. If you're not, it could take a couple of weeks.

3) You're getting the Collector's Edition box. These only shipping out starting today.

Quick question, and I apologize if its been answered elsewhere. but I was wondering if the Collectors Edition is only available online for ordering, or are retail outlets getting them as well as the regular edition?

I pre-ordered the digital download early and was under the impression we could pay a bit more and get shipped a box/CD/manual. Is this true and if so how do we do it?

Thanks for everything! Looking forward to playing this great game. As a programmer myself, I say you guys are top-notch, first-class developers.

The only retailer who's opted to take the Collector's Edition is Fry's Electronics. If you're lucky enough to live near one of these legendary stores (as I've never heard a bad thing about one), then you should be okay. ;)

Yup, please email [email protected] with your request and they'll get you hooked up. ;)

Contact [email protected] about the download to box upgrade. It will cost $5 plus shipping ($10 US, $20 International).

Frogboy stated that Fry's Electronics would have it. Otherwise no stores are known to be carrying it.

I don't know if this has been answered already but..

If anyone needs to get their serial from Stardock Central to play online, with Ironclad online service, do these steps.

-Start "Stardock Central".
-Click on the "Games tab" along the right part of the GUI (Graphical User Interface).
-Right click Sins of a Solar Empire and select "Register Products"
-Make sure your email address is correct, as this information will Send ALL KEYS and -SERIALS to the email account. If the email is not correct and you send your information to that email, your information could be used online without your knowledge.
-Goto to your email and you will find the information you need.

Not really. It sends everything we have about *that* email address to it. So if you enter some other address, it'll send that person whatever is on *their* account, not yours.

This is a fun day. I've had this preordered for many months and got my copy earlier today. This is simply one of the most polished, quality products i've ever purchased(video game-wise). An amazing game. An amazing package. I WILL be getting a strat guide for this one. Thank you devs.
