Considering the game?

Considering the game?

good RTS?

Hey i am considering buying this game now i was a big fan of homeworld and wondering if it plays similar? I am a huge RTS fan I've played the majority of the Command and Conquers and all warcraft and Starcraft games. Now i got burned on pirates of the burning sea MMO because it wasn't great. This game looks epic and I'm wondering peoples opinions because i am on the verge of buying this.

Less fluid? How so?

Ships will get into range of one another... and sit there, unless you tell them otherwise, and even then they're not terribly clever at bringing their powerful weapons to bear while moving. Homeworld 2 actually has motion during combat, and ships are mildly clever about orienting themselves to attack while moving; not to mention ramming, short range point defense guns, and other things that encourage movement.

Most of the ships in HW 2, particularly the capital ships, sit there and do nothing until ordered to attack; they do fire of course. The only ships that actually move around frequently are fighters and corvettes. Capital ships only move to realign themselves when firing their weapons, since they have to track targets. I don't recall HW 2 having ramming...I suppose you mean avoiding ramming each other. In terms of bringing weapons to bear, I assume you mean they are missing?

This may sound kind of dumb, but that's a huge turn off for me. It may be just me, but I loved sitting back every now and then in the homeworld games and just following a ship as it went through combat. Even though the graphics are now dated from a technical perspective, it still is breathtaking to look at. I had kind of been hoping that this game would be similar in that regard.

The only craft you really followed in HW 2 were fighters, and you can do the same in this game, the it's the larger vessels, similiar to HW 2, that don't move around much.

There was ramming. In fact, there were ram frigates (or were they in HW1?). As well, cap ships could be ordered to smash into one another, damaging both ships (much fun).

All ships would attack automatically if put into the correct stance. And the other thing: moving ships often kept themselves oriented to fire their weapons, or at least had large weapons that could fire while not pointing direct at the enemy; and there were distinct advantages to moving them around, namely in bringing short-range weapons into range. If I recall, some cap ships only actually turned to the orientation you ordered them to move to if it was particularly far away and they needed to utilize their main engines.

I've got the urge to reinstall HW2 and the PDS mod again. I might be a bit off in my memory of the game, but battles did seem far more interesting in it. The higher count of fighters and corvettes could have been a good part of it.

Ram frigates? I own both versions of Homeworld, and I have never heard of such a ship. Fighters could Kamikaze in HW 1, but you had to order them to do so. ANd I've never seen captial ships ram into each other.

They would fire on enemies automatically when they came in range, but they wouldn't move. Now if you set them to agressive, they would attack without being ordered to do so. But this caused problems, since they would pursue anything that came into reasonable range, whether it be a probe or a ship it had no chance of defeating. It was not uncommon to see fighters relentlessly pursuing enemy vessels across the map when set to agressive; not fun at all.

Short range weapons were usually reserved for fighters, which had to come close for them to be utilized, otherwise, when ordered to attack, ships would get in range automatically.

Moving ships had no real advantage (particularly ion frigates), unless you wanted them to miss, or to retreat. Besides, they moved dirt slow (crusiers are a fine example).

Hello,

I am also considering of buying Sins. I like space-kind of games and RTS but the problem with me is that I don't go multiplayer with them, only SP.

I believe that this game is all about MP? Is it worth getting it for singleplayer experiance only?

Thank you for any answers.

Cheers

Now I recall where I remembered them from. Ramming frigates were in Homeworld: Cataclysm.

A number of cap ships in HW2 seemed to have at least short-range point-defense guns, or I'm now blending in memories of the PDS mod. Honestly I can't tell any longer.

Moving ships was helpful in, say, retreat or to pull a cap ship behind when it needed repairs. My point there (edit: in my last post, not the ones before) was largely that you could do that, and keep firing. If I try that in Sins, the ship seems to (at least almost always) turn around completely, then move; in the process, turning its main guns away from the enemy and making the ship largely useless.

You're quite right; the largest Cap ships in HW2 had PD.

Perhaps, on the moving and firing point, the devs could come up with a fix?

Hef is right, too; neither HW1 nor HW2 had ram frigates, and if they existed in cat, then (excuse my asking) how big a loss is it if Sins ships don't ram? I mean, since we're comparing to the HW games in general, we could say the majority didn't have ramming-built ships, so on that point Sins doesn't "lose out". Although of course in HW1 you could order ships to ram...
Again, maybe we should ask the devs about such a feature in upcoming updates or expansions?

Absolutely. I only play SP, have zero interest in MP capabilities, and this game is still freaking awesome...

Yes, it is worth it. There's no campaign, but singleplayer is very solid. As much or better than every other RTS.

And the Devs have promised to update the game AI as time passes and the way players play becomes clear.

No they didn't. Capital ships were bomber-chowder.

...that might be because bombers are specifically designed to blow up frigates and cap ships.
By the largest cap ships I mean ships like the Battlecruisers. They had PD. Just not enough to support themselves against a bomber onslaught...
I didn't say it was sufficient PD; they just had PD. I believe it took the form of pulsar beams (which, at the very least, can fend off corvettes and fighters, but clearly not a whole load of bombers).

I'm not quite sure what we're discussing here, but I do know that my favorite capital ship so far (the T.E.C. main battleship) has a ton of autocannons on every side of its hull and a flak power. Does that qualify as point defense in Sins?

IIRC The Battle Cruiser had 2 Ion Lances for PD. BFM <--Before Mod's)

Some of the mods to HW2 had the ships decked out like WWII ships. . Looked a lot like some of the battle footage form the Pacific. With Gauss rounds sprouting from ports flak shells streaming out Anti Fighter/Missile Missiles being launched all the wile the main guns were rotating to bear. <--- I remember watching one BC for about 10 Minutes one time. . I cant recall the mod but it had about 16 Turrets and they were all tracking different targets.

"Starts digging for HW2 Disk again."
