no fleets/control groups on the empire tree?

i just played my first online game tonight, and i was rather frustrated because my fleets/control groups wouldn't appear on my empire tree/side bar... any reason why this is happening? i have the option enabled in the user interface settings. this worked fine in my beta version-

thanks

i think you need to go into your interface options and enable pinning of control groups to the empire tree.

Fleets are not the same as control groups. Control groups are a userinterface shortcut and fleets are smart groups of ships that know how to work together (you can control group a fleet if you like). You probably need to create a fleet by bandboxing some ships, opening the tactical menu and pressing "create fleet". This will show up in the Empire Tree if your options are set correctly.

Fleets are all kinds of awesome. Take a bit of getting used to, but the added smartness is great :P

So I assume then that selecting a group of ships and pressing Ctrl-1 is different then using the tactical menu and making a fleet? I hope there is a way to change Ctrl-1 to make fleet instead of assign control group. I thought Ctrl-number was a RTS standard to make fleets/groups of units that work together.

Ctrl-number will create a group of units that move together, just like any modern RTS game. But creating a fleet is a different beast. It's a cohesive unit of ships that work together (not simply move together).

I guess I dont see the point of making a group of ships that move together but dont work together. Making control groups just seem pointless to me. I checked the key bindings and I could not find a way for Ctrl-number to make/select fleets instead of making control groups.

You can use F, F to create a fleet from a selected group of ships. You can also assign a control group number to a fleet by selecting it and hitting CTRL+
