Random Crashes

Vista 64

I get random crashes to desktop in every game that I play. Sometimes it is 30 seconds in, other times I can play for an hour before it crashes. As a side note, I am a heavy gamer and play several other games for hours on end without any issues.

Here is my setup:

Vista 64bit
E6600
4G RAM
X-Fi Soundblaster
8800GTX

I am playing the game with full graphics. Everything turned up, at the highest resolution. I am currently re-installing it on my XP partition and will report back whether it works there or not. All drivers are updated, btw.

Can you try playing in windowed mode and checking for dump files in either

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Temp

or

C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\Temp\Sins Dump

You can send them to [email protected].

There some other things to try here as well: https://forums.sinsofasolarempire.com/?g=editpost&aid=174432

I got a dump as well - it has been emailed.

It was the first crash I have had in over two months. I'm shocked! :d

I'll get the dump tonight when I am home from work and mail it in. I did install it on my XP partition and it works flawlessly there.

A spontaneous reboot often means your computer is tossing a Blue Screen of Death but is set to not display it. BSODs are generally caused by hardware or driver problems, and the error message it shows can help pin down exactly what the issue is.

To have your computer display BSODs instead of rebooting immediately, go to Control Panel->System Properties->Advanced Tab->Startup and Recovery Settings and uncheck 'automatically restart'.

The next time it crashes, you may get a BSOD similar to the one below (not all highlighted parts may be present):

Write down the information in the highlighted areas before turning your computer off. The information there can then be researched online to see if others have experienced similar problems, and what the cause was. You may also get a 'windows has recovered from a serious error' message when you turn your computer back on--if you do this, you should agree to send the report to microsoft. You'll then be forwarded to information about that error on Microsoft's knowledgebase, if they have any.

Melric:

Vista 64 + Nvidia card (often 78XX, 79XX, 8800 series) = trouble.

Check out this thread.

It sounds like you are a victim of this problem, which apparently NVidia is looking at.

I've got the same problem but I'm using ATI 3870X2

64bit Vista, Q6600, 4GB

last night I was able to play for 3 hours without a single crash, but I've crashed 4 times this morning alone, it's random and it's getting on my nerves

hi guys!
i have exactley the same problem.

config:
Q6600
MSI 8800GTS (640mb)
Vista x32 (i'm installing xp x32 this moment, trying if it works better under xp, because a crashing game sucks kind'a little bit ;))
4096 MB RAM (Corsair XMS2)

really don't know what the problem could be. tried everything.

sometimes the game directly crashes after start-up. And isn't able to start again UNTIL i reboot. afterwards it works fine for about 45-130 min, until it crashes again.

Thanks && greetings,
cV

Why do you recommend that? I ask, because I always play SINS in a window on my 1440 x 900 desktop, on a 17-inch widescreen, and I was wondering if there were advantages and/or disadvantages of playing in a window -- from a purely technical point of view (not considering the esthetic and the gameplay issues).

I dropped my Planets setting down from highest to high and it seemed to reduce this type of crash (where Vista pops up a screen saying the game has quit working). Now I get the game just freezing (I have to alt-tab out and end process). So I have dropped ALL settings down to High and will see if that works. I was trying to find a place to edit the interval for the autosave but haven't found it. I hate losing so much of the game when it crashes.

I get the same problem, it seems to crash at some point during the game, and then after that it crashes every time i load it to that point, really starting to annoy me.
