Slow mo , thread dive issue found! devs?

Basically this IS WITH VSYNC OFF , whenever there is a message the frame rate dives out... I tested this in the solar system zoomed out..

Smooth as anything to start off with , gave 100 metal to another race came back to the solar system view and the message came up " THANKYOU FOR SUPPORT ". The frame rate dived to about 15-20fps , message clears off the screen frame rates back to 60+. I asked for a trade alliance , message pops up that it was accepted or declined again frame rates dive to 15-20fps message clears frame rates shoot back up again.

Does this happen all the time? This happens to me at the beginning of games, possibly just looking for various information.

I've only been playing for the last 40mins however it happens on any map and with some messages in the tutorial... With no messages the game is totaly smooth , but any message of " Thanks for the support " or " alliance not accepted " frame rate dives out

It appears i also have this identical problem (just as Neil described); so it's not just an isolated case it appears.

Do you guys have this problem when you're looking at infocards too? That would suggest the text-rendering is part of the problem.

Ok on further investigation its related to the COLOURED text that appears at the top..

Does the slow down also happen when you send a chat message?

I pressed enter to get the chat window up and typed something and had it show up on the main screen , frame rates remained the same... I went into diplomacy , send some metal to another race waited for the message in the solar system screen " Thankyou for the xxxx " and the frame rates dived.

At this time its looking like the coloured text or the messages from other races is causing it.

Another example of the coloured text or message frame rate dive.

Alien ships or ship comes into my system , i see a coloured message at the top saying for example " Your planet is weak we will destroy it " frame rates dive. Message clears off the screen , frame rate recovers

The framerate drops quite significantly for me when viewing infocards. The game is still entirely playable, and i wouldn't have noticed it without Fraps running, but it just seems kind of strange.

Yeah, I noticed this too. I'm pretty much always running 60fps but as soon as an infocard, pop up message, or any other text appears my fps drops to almost 30. As soon as the text disappears it goes back up to 60 fps.

It happens any time an alpha-blended (transparent/translucent) UI texture shows up on the screen be it chat text, an info card or the main menu.
Same, when info cards are up or messages, but as most my system can handle what this game throws at it so really wasn't all too bad. Still very playable, could hurt lower end systems thou I am sure.

Did I say I love this game? well I do! :)

I found these issues dissapeared for me when I upgraded to the latest nVidia driver (171.16 beta).

I'm using windows Vista X64
Intel Core2 E6750
nVidia Geforce 7900GTO
2GB ram.

I hope this helps everyone else , the drivers can be found at guru3d.com

I was having this same problem. I have a laptop with a Radeon Mobility X600. I was running Catalyst 7.9 drivers (September i think) and updated to the latest Catalyst 8.1 drivers. Upon doing so, the problem has pretty much ceased to exist. I can tell there is still a very very slight stutter when the text is on the screen but it is only noticeable because I am now looking for it and it does not interrupt gameplay at all anymore, whereas before it was so slow it was hindering everything.

On another note, the stuttering that I was getting sometimes from switching to research view and doing other things in other menus has also disappeared.

So for us ATI peeps, looks like 8.1 is good stuff at the moment.
