Fleet management: Improvement?

Hi there. It's been a long time since I downloaded my beta version of this game. I had a lot of fun with it, but there was one thing that nagged me during my games, and it was the poor AI of fleet management on the tactical level. My fleets were running like headless chicken in a mass of gauss cannons while not even using their long-range strike advantage.

Now, I'm in the middle of a good game of X-Com, and I don't really dare downloading the most recent version of the game until I feel ready about it. Can someone tell me how they improved the general AI's performance (both as an adversary and as a fleet admiral?)

In the final game there is actual fleet functionality that lets you bind ships together, so they act as a unit. It makes it much easier to manage them, and (depending on the cohesion range you set) the fleet won't stray far from the leader. If you fleet your long range units together separately from your main fighting force, you should be able to easily hold the short-range ships back while the LRMs take down the defenses.

how good has fleet automation been developped? Even if micro-management is not required, do I still need to babysit a major fleet attacking a system?
