Why does Patch 1.1 ask you to reboot?

I downloaded and installed the 1.1 update, and afterwards it asked me to reboot. Why? I always get a little suspicious when an installer asks me to reboot because it usually means that its making system changes that I'd rather it didn't. I noticed that afterwards, now some programs don't automatically exit when I shutdown my rig forcing me to sit there and click the "End Program" dialog that pops up.

Love the game, but I want to know what 1.1 did to computer.

Some system changes are necessary. Most installers manipulate the system registry, which requires a reboot so the changes are applied, regardless if it is a local user or local system change. Temporary files are also generated by installers, some of which can only be deleted once the computer has rebooted and the files are no longer in memory / locked etc. I doubt it's anything to worry about.

Reboots after installation really haven't been necessary since Windows 98 except for system level software like firewalls, anti-virus, and hardware drivers. I installed Sins and started up the game just fine without rebooting, so it was definitely a surprise when I was asked to reboot after installing a patch. The only time in recent memory I've had a game ask me to reboot is if it was slipping something like StarForce onto the hard drive.

There's also the curious matter of my shutdown problems appearing immediately following the installation of the patch. Hopefully one of the developers will see this and respond.

There is a patch already?? Wow! How did I miss it...

What for I wonder...

UPDATE: No patch just a missed named thread. Title should read: 'v1.01' at a minimum or the full 'v1.0.012' number.

Just to clarify, the patch is for retail versions only, not the digitally downloadable version :)

Since this game implements no form of copy protection, I doubt StarForce or something nasty has been installed. Install programs almost always ask you to reboot, even when you really don't have to. I guess old habits die hard i.e the Win95/98 era.

Still, it IS still necessary sometimes, for the reasons I have already stated. I honestly think you have nothing to worry about. Although thinking about it, it does seem like an unlikely coincidence.

Did you install the .NET framework so you could use Galaxy Forge? Or was it already installed? Just trying to help :)

I probably did get the patch version wrong. Sorry for any confusion.

I checked for StarForce, so I know that's not the problem. I was just giving it as an example of why I get very suspicious when an installer asks me to reboot.

Like I said, I honestly can't remember the last time a game installer asked me to reboot, let alone a patch!

As far as I'm aware, it was already installed, but perhaps the patch updates it?

And you're right that my shutdown problems could be a coincidence. All I know is that my computer shutdown fine, then I installed the game, installed the patch, and now I have shutdown problems, so who knows.

I'm assuming you have the usual sweet of anti-spyware and mal-ware tools right? Has your Hijack This! log file changed significanly before/after? If there is a new program running inteh background it'll show up there. Also cleaning the registry and checking to see what programs are hanging on you and if they have known issues.

I usually get GDI errors on my shutdown. Its the runtime (gtk) that my Instant messenger uses.

Update:

Looks like it wasn't a problem with the patch at all as my computer appears to have spontaneously fixed itself. Must have been a gremlin.
