New wiki for Sins

go, maek poast!

http://sinsofasolarempire.wikia.com/wiki/Main_Page
Hey all,

I've requested a new wiki from wikia.com, and they were nice enough to grant my request. So, if anyone feels like contributing to the wiki by posting content, feel free! Offhand, I'm thinking we could really use the following:
- detailed ship lists, including resource costs, hull & shield ratings, weapon damage, etc.
- detailed research lists, including resource costs, effects, etc.
- detailed breakdown on special abilities for capital ships, including antimatter cost, targets affected, etc.

Basically, a more detailed addendum to the manual, I guess. The Mass Effect wiki is a good example of what's possible. Hopefully in time we'll have something equally useful.

A wiki is a great idea. Certainly would be handy to hold information for the game like strategies and modding info.

vonPoon,

As soon as they let us extract the binary .entity files into an ascii format, it will be much easier to get ship stat lists and similar raw data. 'til then it would be unnecessarily painful ;)

But thanks very much for setting up a wiki, I had been asking about it because there didn't seem to be a "gaming" wiki for SoaSE (at least not in English). The idea has great potential if we contribute.

Ummm... Maybe I'm missing something. How is this different from Wikipedia? Speaking of which, it needs some serious love.

Spartan,

Wikipedia policy is against having full-fledged strategy guides and data dumps of unit stats and whatnot, that's why they have this template:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Move_to_gaming_wiki

to quote:

Articles on video games should not list minutiae or give a detailed description of how to play the game. Such topics should be moved to a gaming wiki, such as StrategyWiki, Encyclopedia Gamia, or GamerWiki.
End of quote

An example of a game entry with that template:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stellar_Frontier (this is an old game licensed by Stardock, incidentally) - look about halfway down the page for the tag.

As you can see, that's not even tons and tons of data about the game, we'd certainly want to exceed that.

On the other hand, I can agree that the wikipedia entry for SoaSE could use some work.

Aloha!

Yeah I'm aware that WP does not want start guides on the site. I posted my comment to quickly (things like that happen when one does not sleep for days at a time). What I meant to state was we have something like three (3) or even four (4) wiki based sites being promoted already and no one is working on "the main one" for lack of better words.

Additionally, I think all the people initiating all these wiki sites should really get together and seriously work out a plan for a single comprehensive resource with multi language support while actively developing the main wiki one.

I'm sorry if I confused anyone.

It is a difficult challenge, Spartan, as different Wiki's can address different needs. I've honestly never seen a game that only had one Wiki, and in my experience it has actually been helpful to the overall accessibility of information.

Mass Effect, for instance, has the Wikia page, as well as a standalone wiki. Both are well done and valuable.

As of yesterday afternoon, the only available wiki for SoaSE was in German with no English content. VonPoon and I both saw the need for an English wiki. Poon opened a Wikia page, and I set up a Wiki site within half an hour of one another.

Where it goes from here is really up to the community. I have that domain and hosting set for several years, and the Wikia page is there until it goes "stale" and Wikia decides to remove it. That being the case, it doesn't really make much sense for either one to be immediately deleted.

@Nipoez - I feel you. Trying to get a bunch of different people with vastly different ideas and often huge time zone differences as well as language issues can be like herding cats.

If I were going to do a wiki page I would contact all the other known wiki people and try to coordinate efforts and have everyone work as a team on the "main" wiki page and take it from there.

Anyway, your effort is appreciated nonetheless. I hope you did not take my comment to be disparaging in any way.
