Tip on Economy?

Anyone have any tips on creating a large powerful economy, I was able to in the beta, but now, mainly because of that pesky upkeep I cant maintain my status as the most financially powerful nation. Thanks.

I put a trade station at every single possible planet/planetoid. If you're having trouble with expansion because of planetary upkeep fees then look for some of the planet-empty asteroid belts/gas pockets/gas giants. They always have metal/crystal stations you can capture with a colony frigate. If you can capture these quickly you can use the black market to sell off your surplus and balance out your economy.

Yea, trade ports and refineries are very important.

Trade ports: Build one on one side of your empire, then one on the opposite side. Any planets that are in between should be have a trade port built on them. Try to keep this line away from open fronts though, the last thing you want is other empires having a nice piracy campaign, and you can't reroute your trade ships.

Refineries: Find a planet that directly connects as many high resource 'roid to it as possible and build three refineries there. Mines can only take 3 refineries at a time and the ships will only make two phase jumps, to a bordering system and back. Try and build the most efficient (no overlap) system as possible. For example, on Systems at War (I think that's the name), its best to build 3 refiners on the asteroid planet opposite your capital and 3 on the dead-end desert world, that way nothing overlaps. As with trade ships, try and keep it away from other empires.

You will be swimming in credits, metal, and crystals in no time!

Whenever I take a planet I immediately start research on improving the population stuff to get rid of that underdevelopment cost. Just like they said a trade post at every planet (and if you're a real eco person like me, a refinery as well) will have you swimming in resources quickly. You'll never have enough to build everything you want, but you'll have what you need :P.

Also, unlike in the beta, the mining upgrades are quite useful now. Those and the other economy ones like cheaper buildings or basically any research that affects your global economy are good ideas if you can spare it.
