(Possible Solution)Vista - Out of Memory Error

I am getting the "Out of Memory, close application" error. Just happened, was at the tail end of a 1 on 1 game, and it started popping up. Every 3-5 minutes I'd dump to desktop and get the error. 1st time it closed the game. Reloaded the Auto-save and was lucky that every time after that I was able to cancle out and keep playing.

This is not new for me. Several games do this. I heard it was something about vista not being able to use Ram (video?) properly. Some games had workarounds...any ideas about this game?

And yes, I got the hotfix the day it came out..didn't help at all.

Hmmmm.. I played the game on both 32b & 64b versions of Vista and I have yet to get any memory errors nor do I remember any beta testers reporting such crashes. I am also unaware of any "hotfix" patches on the first day either.

I would suggest checking your memory or system config but I'm not a real hardware or even OS guys so I could not offer any ideas after the fact so I wont. I hope things get fixed for you ASAP.

I doubt it has anything to do with my PC per-se.

But just incase -

Core 2 Duo 2.66gz
2 GB RAM
8800 GTX
Creative SB X-FI
150 GB SATA
500 GB SATA

The hotfix is for vista. It was supposed to address memory issues. This has happened in several games and from what I got in other tech forums it has to do with vista and how it handles memory. One game had a fix, command line switch I believe.

I run Vista 64 with an Nvidia 8800 GTX KO and I have never had a memory error through all the beta's or the retail release.

I would suggest you post a DXDiag for the developers to help out after you have checked all your drivers are up to date.

well I havn't had any problems yet but depending on your Vista settings, your OS could be using up to 1.4Gb of RAM all by itself... (I'm running 4GM ram with Vista 64 bit and vista itself uses that much if I have Aero and a few other background stuff opening)

.6GB of ram is still pretty big but if your running sims and your Virus Scanner starts up I can see where you could run out of memory real fast.

You can try this fix I posted, it works for me so long as you follow the instructions. Read step 3 carefully.

:SURPRISED: I have Vista. I run Aero. With Steam running in the background I'm sitting at 538mb of RAM being used. Also Aero turned off when you use a 3D game.

If you have not installed this hotfix, you should do so:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/940105

It specifically addresses the issue of video RAM usage as its mapped to regular RAM. 32-bit and 64-bit versions are both provided.

And Habadacus, how about being helpful or just not saying anything at all?

Best advice you can give a Vista gamer is to tell them to wipe the drive and put XP on it. Seriously.

Have all neccesary hotfixes etc

No the best advice would be to get vista 64 bit. Microsoft will eventually force most gamers to get vista anyways.

lol yea i uninstalled vista and went back to xp until i really need dx10, i just hated it and i had to spend around and hour tweaking all the services and turning off all the junk before i was happy with it anyway and by then it wasnt much more than xp with dx10 ;p

maybe i can survive with xp until 2009

There was a program memory address patch they released back in August. If you haven't installed that and the other general performance hotfix, try those.

I have Vista, don't turn off Aero, and run Sins of a Solar Empire at 1680x1050 on full detail.

So far, no memory errors with that fix. But I started a new game, so I don't know yet.

Thanks for that, its exactly what I was looking for.
