Should be getting the game tomorrow. What to expect?

First things first, hello to the community.

I first heard of Sins this morning (*gasp*) from Tycho's message on Penny Arcade, after which I browsed the site quite a bit and read many forum posts. I loved what I saw, and so I called my local EB Games (Gamestop here -I'm in Canada) and reserved the Collector's Edition, which they should be receiving tomorrow.

Now, I've played some Galactic Civilizations 2, and I know better than to expect a fast paced, typical RTS in the vein of Starcraft or Command & Conquer.

What I AM expecting is a real-time GalCiv2 with less micromanagement involved (since I don't think the same level of management can be required in a real-time environment). Am I correct in this?

I ask this so I'm not disappointed after installing the game due to having false expectations, and also so I can let the people at EB Games know a little bit more about the game. I used to work there before getting a job as a developer where I work now and all the guys working there now are friends of mine. We talked a little bit about the game this morning, and none of them had very good idea about what the game actually was. I'd like to inform them as accurately as possible when I go pick up my copy tomorrow after work.

Also, this may seem like a dumb question, and I bet it is, but I didn't see any information regarding this. Is it possible to play a multiplayer game with a friend against AI opponents, as in the two of us versus the computer? Apologies in advance if this question has been answered, as it's quite possible that I missed it.

I'm really looking forward to playing Sins over the weekend, as I thoroughly enjoyed what I saw of GalCiv2.

Thanks for your time!

Yep, you can make any combination of Human and AI teams you like.

From Kosc, "ponies" means something similar to "perfect."

Anyway, it is a bit like a real-time GC2, and a bit not. The empire management is similar in some ways, but the combat... is like watching the Battle of Endor and being able to control all the ships. It's entertaining just locking the camera to a Bomber and watching the battle from a first-person viewpoint, but you can also decide to interact with your fleet.

Indeed it is most excellent. Tycho should do a detailed write-up on it tomorrow I suspect based on what he said on Wednesday. It also shares a lot in the vein of Master of Orion type games except real-time instead of turn-based.

Thanks for the replies guys and/or gals. I suspect I'll be spending a lot of time with this game in the coming months.

Just to add to your expectations (oh and enjoy a full nights sleep tonight at least!) I thought the game would have less micro management than it does. Don't get me wrong, its not as bad as turned based games, and Ironclad has done a wonderful job minimizing the need for player management in most areas, I just find myself doing more than I thought I would do (especially later in the game when you have multiple planets... duh!). Maybe its because some of the things the AI does, like auto-placement, attack priority, etc. don't alway seem like the wisest choice.

That said, I still find the game extremely enjoyable. Just don't expect to be kicking butt and taking names until you've had time to absorb a good portion of the gameplay and get used to the awesome interface. I've read the manual, read basic hints and tip info here in the forums and I'm still learning new things or learning from my mistakes after 10 games or so (and that's only on small maps with me vs the PC). I still have yet to scratch the surface on some truly engaging Multiplayer against another human or on bigger maps! :-)

Later,
~JO
