Diplomacy?

Hey yall, new to the forums and all, but I really like the game its definitely awesome and lived up to all the hype. I guess I only had one complaint, and its the diplomacy aspect of the game? I'm not sure if I'm just not doing it right, but it seems really hard to keep any allies in the game, the constant missions they give you to make them like you are sort of unreasonable, for instance once they wanted me to destroy 5 tactical structures, and i attacked this guys world and he had none, and i ended up destroying his enemies entire planet, and they still canceled our peace treaty cus I didn't specifically kill the 5 tactical structures. Sooo when its a big game and the several guys I wanted to ally with are constantly asking me to do these missions and I can't do them, they all just end up turning on you and it seems really difficult to keep anybody liking you. Sorry, long gripe, I just remember back when I played MOOII that I'd usually find one computer ally and stick with it, and it worked pretty well. So I dont know if you guys can do anything about it, but thats my main complaint, otherwise its awesome thanks for delivering an awesome game!

--also, does it work to just randomly give resources to guys to make their like percentage go up? Cus I tried it and it didn't seem to move the bar at all. Also can you only get a peace treaty at 100% or something, cus i was at 89% and they still refused to have a peace treaty with me. thanks!

No, it doesn't work like that. They only become happier with you if you give them the resources when they ask for them.

Which is stupid.

It can go either way. It would be quite stupid too if you could just shove resources at all the AIs so they'd ally with you. Not much work involved in that..

I don't know... I have to agree that a more consistent method of diplomacy (short of locking teams) would be nice.

At least give a little more time or a few more options would be nice(say I'm in a war with someone else that is absorbing all of my ships, and my only ally wants me to attack someone on the other side of my empire, and destroy 5 of their civilian buildings in 15 minutes... not realistic).

To make diplomacy 'work' it has to be reciprocal, expansive, and logical.

I'd like to have the ability to give THEM missions personally.

You kinda can if you ally with them, you can request that they send ships to different places by selecting them and clicking the buttons in the toolbar.

Diplomacy is a bit messed up right now. I generally ignore it until I've beat one of the AIs, at which point one of the others is usually up to 60+% thanks to them assigning me missions to kill the AI I'm already after, if I get lucky I can get a cease-fire and trading out of that and then hope for a good mission to get to a peace treaty. It's not intuitive, or sensible, at all but it works.

maybe like.... they could do a system where if ur above a certain percentage with one guy, and ur fighting his opponent, they give u percentage of likeness for each ship of the enemies you kill. like really small and incremental, a little more for capitol ships, a like whole percentage point or two for killing an enemy planet? and then if u came in defense of one of their planets that could boost ur favorability rating too, so like instead of .05 percent for each ship, its like .08 or something? that seems kinda feasible i guess, and more realistic, after all if ur fighting their enemy for them they should like you more... but i suppose that if they already hate them ur doing the missions for them so i dunno

screw that. there is no diplo in this game. i mean the "Demands" the AI gives you are insane.

besides, arent the 3 races supposed to be at war all the time? :SURPRISED:

Yeah, I love the game, but diplomacy seems pretty useless right now except maybe way late in the game when you can actually take out an opponent...and that would only work if the other AI's had missions for you to attack that player.

Maybe there could be a diplomatic ship you could research, and sending it to another player's planet would create "talks" to increase your allegiance and form an alliance?

Agree completely. Couldn't have put it better.

It just seems weird in general. Some of the demands just don't make sense. "Hey, um... I know you've just taken out my fleet and all, but I was wondering if you'd give me 200 metal? I'll like you more..."

Now, I know it's a step up from a regular rts where now you can kind of influence who the other players attack (think warcraft all vs all, attack indiscriminately), but it's a big step down from what we're accustomed to for the big strategy games (bribes, tribute, technology sharing, etc). It just matters the viewpoint. I'm sure they'll revamp it soon enough, in the meantime try out the locked teams.

Technology sharing is the only 4X aspect that should not be ported. I'd like to see everything else in with a revamp of the mission system.

Just an inquiry, what happened to being able to see your ally's resources?
(I remember in the BETA you could see how many resources they had.)

i'm not sure how moddable the diplomacy AI is but if it can be modded to make more sense, it will be eventually.

It is unfortunate how far biased towards RTS the "Diplomacy" aspect is in Sins. I put that in quotation marks because.. its not really diplomacy. From the feel of it, Ironclad was trying to minimize the amount of time necessary spent at the Diplomacy screen/table to minimize time spent away from your empire, the battles and so forth.

But it really hurts the game to have such bland, annoying diplomacy -- its probably the aspect of the game that drags down my enjoyment of the game the most. I've largely gone to locked team games, in single player, just to not have to deal with it.

It'd be really nice if Ironclad patched in, eventually, actual diplomacy instead of this.. farce. Its about the only part of the game that screams "unpolished".

Eh, just play online. Humans are far more interesting to argue with than AI giving you impossible missions. :)

Meh, I don't want to play online, I have never wanted to, and I most likely never will want to. In any game I play. I deal with enough people during the day at work, that the last thing I want to do when trying to relax, by gaming, is deal with even more people.

Personally, I'd rather have the diplomacy amped up so it made more sense, was more than impossible and/or stupid missions, but was more actual diplomacy. Even us anti-social singleplayers want and deserve an enjoyable and in-depth game, regardless of how much more interesting playing against real people is supposed to be.

Diplomacy by its definition means that there is some communication going on. Well, there's communication going on here all right- all ONE WAY! There not much the human player can do in a positive way to influence his situation except the seemingly endless "run and fetch" demands of the AIs. The human can't make any demands, has very little chance of making any real lasting alliances- nothing... Why even include it in the game if it's this one sided?

I've played a few games now and my basic philosophy has become "screw it"- all I'm doing is giving away stuff I need myself to someone who more likely sooner than later is going to turn on me.

Same here, I don't even bother with it. I quit my old game and started a new one with locked teams, diplo is a joke right now.

I agree as well that diplomacy is best ignored right now. I'm just not getting it. I did 2 missions for a race, and they liked me 70%. I set up a ceasefire with them, and out of nowhere, they said I was interfering, and started attacking me. The AI removed the ceasefire and liked me 0 percent.
Excellent game otherwise though. I also aggree 15 minutes isn't enough time, and they come to fast.
