Sudden performance problem 2 - 5 FPS

From time to time my game suddenly starts stuttering like crazy, It goes from a solid 60 to 5 FPS.

This happen completely randomly, it is not the message stutter (see WWW Link). I have tried lowering my settings but there was no difference. I have also tried both the standard Nvidia driver and the Beta drivers but there is no difference there either.

Mostly when this happens I just reload a old save but this time I save over my most recent save accidentally when it happened.

Can anyone try to load my save game and see if the same thing?

Specs:
CPU: C2D 6400
Ram: 4 GB
OS: Vista Business x64, all updates installed including the patch recommended in the faq thread.
GPU: Geforce 7950X2.

The strange thing is that my CPU load stays at 60% and that both cores are running fine, it is almost like it is my GPU that suddenly gets overloaded but there is no heat problem.

I think it has been stated on another thread that there was currently a potential issue with nVidia drivers and Vista (especially the 64-bit edition).

It was there recommended to disable SLI mode and use only one videocard.

It seems that the ball is in nVidia's court : it (not Ironclad or Stardock) would have the responsibility to fix their Vista drivers to make them more gaming compatible -- especially with 64-bit Vista and SLI.

You seem to perceive that the problem is related to your GPU : it might be because of the situation I have just described.

Aye seems like you've really gone all out with an incompatible OS vista is bad enough but 64bit vista. As Cybermage said probably driver issues.

I'm getting about 15 fps at 1280x1024 and no AA with a p4-3ghz machine with 2gb ram and a geforce 6800 ultra...hahaha! I guess its time to upgrade...

I have had the same issues as the TC. So has my friend. My Specs

Core2 [email protected]
2GB Ram
X1950XT
Win XP Pro SP2.

The game just randomly goes from a solid 60fps to 2-3fps. This was without any patches though. I just recently updated it but haven't really played it yet to know if the problem still exists. I also seem to get white artifacts around asteroids but its not a heat issue.
