Let us know what you'd like in v1.03

Wow.  We're just so happy that people are liking the game.  We're also happy that the reviews are coming out very positive so far.  And, well, we're definitely happy with the sales.  It's doing even better than Galactic Civilizations II did which was really well.

Here's our upcoming schedule:

  1. Get a v1.03 update out
  2. Make Demo
  3. Start work on v1.04

We hope to get v1.03 out by the end of the month (no promises though). Ironclad (and Stardock) are pretty exhausted from the final weeks of effort and the first week of launch so resting will be done. :)

So think of v1.03 as a few key tweaks that you think would really make the game more enjoyable not just for you but other people.

Here's an example of things we're talking about right now:

  • Updated AI players
  • More Game Speed Options
  • More aggressive AI players replacing dropped players (i.e. active AI)
  • AI surrendering
  • Improvements to ICO
  • Unit cap increases

We have lots of ideas. But the key thing to remember, we want to get 1.03 out this month if possible. So sure, we can all imagine things like random events or fancier diplomacy or other things of that nature but those would take far too long to get into the game.

A modding tree document would be great. Since people are providing mods, some have figured it out. I still haven't. The modding document should explain the connections between various files, so a mod can be done and work. I see a lot of potential with modding, if I can figure out how to do it.

I would like to see minelaying ships, able to lay large minefields to help improve defense options, and a boost to planetary defenses, maybe just a range increase to the weapons would be adequate, but a bit of an improvement would be nice, i don't want them to be able to take down huge fleets but a bit more power to the defenses would be nice.

Ensure pirate attacks only originate from the pirate base, instead of the sometimes randomly jumping in while their base is in trouble, they should jump to that system attempt to defend it first, then continue with raids maybe.

I would like tosee more aggreesive AI, I have a game of me and 4 aggresive a.i.s and 5 aggresive ai's against us,a nd they jsut sit in opposite systems and waiting for the other to attack with massive fleets, i would like to see the ai be more aggresive and attempt to fight the enemy more than it currently does, or having them listen to pings and orders like the ally attack this system pings actually work.

Pirate capital ships, maybe one or two, lower the ammount of other vessels in severe raid and give them access to say a battleship and battlecruiser, then most severe raids they launch it with the raid, to give them a bit more variety.

Also i would also like to see independant reasearching because of the independant facilities, either that or a combination into 1 research facility, but increase the ammount required for each research to balance it.

I would also like to see lower fleet upkeep caps and higher pop cap limit, i believe 75% is quite steep for a civilisation, or have it dependant on how many ships you actually have, for example you could have a 4000 fleet limit, but if you only use 1000 you should only be taking a quarter of the cost required to upkeep this or something similiar maybe?

Just a few thoughts, but either way still love the game and great to see developers taking interest of their customers, the gamers.

I don't have time for 4 hour 3v3s

Well, don't play 3v3 then. Stick to 1v1 small maps and you'll be A-Okay.

I know people have requested that taking extractors be prioritized over scouting for the vasari scout, but I'd like to request that that change not take place. Uncolonizable planets often have defenders and having a scout loiter in a system getting shot at is worse than having to redirect them to an uncolonizable world now and then.

Also, as others have mentioned, the game hates vista and starts becoming unplayably crashy after about 4 hours.

How about a pause button for single player games? I know it may seem lazy to ask for that since you can jus save and reload, but I think it'll be more convienient.

Just hit the menu button... it pause the game... exit the menu and you can continue the game... no need to save or reload !!!

First of all, thanks for such a great game!

I agree with the player who said most improvements can be made in the game setup screen, before the match actually starts. This way it can appeal to everyone. It would be very nice to be able to customize the type of game you want to play, and the dynamics so players can choose the way they want the game. These changes are for the single player. For example:

- The ability to customize the pirates. Maybe a slider that specifies how often the pirates attack, and the ability to turn them off if you want. I don't understand the reason for paying bounty, they seem to attack regardless. Also, being that each race has it's own economic stengths and weaknesses being able to pay in metal or crystal would be a nice option.

- The ability to choose if you want to exclude certain units or structures (PJI's, repair platforms, seige ships, etc) like they implemented in Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance.

- Game speed improvements.

- A choice of how many defense hangers before the game starts would be great also.

Other suggestions..

The AI does retreat too easily. And like some other players have said the AI completely ignores crystal and metal without trying to take them over. I also agree that the AI never puts up a decent defense. The idea of having different planet bonuses is great as well, along with them being different sizes.

I thought about this for just abit but how about these sugestions:

1) Make the research tree more indepth. Maybe more points in certain talents that go past 2 points but not required to go up the tree. More researchable items in general. More then 1 super weapon available per race (but make only 1 super weapon type allowable per game).

1b) With added points and more research points to be able to be spent lower research time on earlier points by a factor of how many research stations you have. So like level 1 research points would be reduced by 25% on time with the aquisition of 4 research stations of that category.

2) More unit types. Mine layers, EMP ships, etc...and more diversity between the races. Balanced accordingly however.

2b) Titan Ships. Accessible on the 5 or 6 capital ship point. Only a 1-2 titans limit per race. Cost nearly double of what a Cap ship is.

3) Cooldown timer on long phase jumps that are between stars.

4) Make a defensive advantage for fleets in their sector, possibly influenced by culture. Example: A fleet is 1 jump away from their home planet, thusly will fighter harder and do more damage then if it was a neutral or outer sight.

5) Include other bodies of mass in gravity wells besides asteroids (moons basically :) ) . Allow moons to have some resource or strategic ability.

One could hope can't they. :)

Can you guys add more to the algorithm that determines the "auto-targeting" feature. I don't like having to micro-manage fleet battles to the point where I need to target which ships to kill first.

For example, I was rushed by a bunch of Illums and a few subjugators and shield recharger thingies (I forget the name). I had Destra crusiers and carriers by then and I should have won that battle, but my ships auto-targeted the Illuminators instead of the support ships--resulting in me losing my entire fleet and only killing 3-4 enemy illums.

Another example is when I'm bombing a planet and the enemy starts to build a bunch of cannons around his planet. Yes, if there are one or two cannons, then auto-target those first, but if there are 20 or so, then your best bet is to try to continue to kill the planet. I mean I can't be zooming in to manually target each cannon every 30 seconds or so.

Basically, I think the AI needs to take into account more before it decides what to attack. It needs to "figure out" that the enemy is casting magic to recharge shields, and therefore it should try to attack another unit.

Last example: In starcraft, if you are rushed by 20 marines and only 2 medics, then you obviously target the 2 medics first; whereas if you are rushed by 12 marines and 10 medics, then you change your tactic accordingly. I was hoping that this game would involve more "macro" strategy and less "micro" management.

The fixing of the insane loading times at start up, (I loaded a old game, and I paused it so I could let it load in game (isn't that what loading screens is for?) knowing it tend to take awhile, i go watch Tv and eat dinner, 2 hours later and it has not loaded a single thing!!!!! I unpause it immeadattly starts to load, witch took so long I gave up after 15ish min.

It has always done this to some degree (With this game) but that is a worst case of loading time ever.

So why not make it so in the loading screen it will load every last byte it needs.

It usally takes around 5 or 10 mins of stuttering while loading, before the game will settle down to the exremely quick FPS and any game I load in the seccesion is instant.

I also tryed lowering the setting from highest to high and it made it 10 times worse, and cause textures to disappear, witch I fixed immeatlly by raising them, and made it playable again.

Did A defrag/virius/spyware scan 2 weeks ago and one each week before that. (Didn't do it this last sunday because I had influnza (Spelling?))

Oh and Supreme Commander played better maxed out then this. It had a slightly lower FPS but it loaded quickly and had zero stuttering. Strange a game that people had always said lagged doesn't for me, but a game that is built on running well on low end machine, runs poorly for me.

I think it's driver, but I don't bother with them, because I'm cursed, it seems like It fixes one bug but causes a new one in the next game I play, witch will be SupCom, if these issues can't be solved soon. (I tend to find one OMG this is the best game ever that I tend to go back to when the new game I try doesn't work out)

On a slightly nicer note I love the game to the moon and back, other than that.

Also one minor W.T.F. bug sometimes the camera will fly off the map suddenly, when I zoom in on a target to far, oh when the camera bugs out and goes haywire.

Specs:

X2 3800+
1 Gb ram
X1950 Pro 512MB
250 Gb HDD
Windows XP Media Center Edition (I'm not going Vista any time soon, I have personally experanced it and hated it to hell.)

Firstly, I want to say that I did not have the time to read all of the posts before me, and so I will (probably) be repeating something that has already been said.

I will not comment on other people's comments either.

All I want to do here is to propose one improvement. But this one fix is extremely important.

I have played the game over ICO many times (Because there is no single player campaign, just about everyone I know who has the game plays over ICO). As a game that is played online extensively, I feel that it is not only a good idea, but paramount, that the game have a stable ranking system(or, at the very least, a means of making player's wins/losses public).

Unfortunately, after having played many games online (I have played 50+ games under the name: "Arcturus"), I have noticed that most players chose to "quit" instead of "surrender" when leaving a game. This prevents players from "taking a loss", but also BREAKS the ranking system, because when players "Quit", instead of using the "Surrender" option, the remaining players do not "Win". Thus keeping track of Wins/Losses is meaningless, because most games end in players "Quitting".

My suggestion is this: Either disable the option for players to "Quit" after a set amount of time (Say, the first five minutes of the game), eliminate the option to "Quit" altogether and force players to surrender if they want to leave, or give remaining players a "Win" when all of their opponents have "dropped" or "Quit".

Thank you,
Arcturus

After playing for several weeks I would like to ADD:

The A.I needs to be more challenging!

No one really should be able to take on 3 Hard A.I with locked teams with 3 against one and no pirates.

thanks!!

-I think the fleet factories need to look better X_X... it like a pile of bones atm....

-Fix the friend list, it's pretty bad atm.(can't whisper when friend in game?) Plz change the color of the friends who are online on the friend list.

-Is there a elapsed time jump in the replay function? Is there's really not, I think it should be added.

-Add new properties to the info card, so I can see which ship of MY fleet is under the effect of vengeance.

Any words when the update is comming out?

Just 2 little things I'd like to have...

A small real-time clock in that little unused area in the top-right corner would be helpful... I seem to lose track of time when getting into a game.. thought that is of course no bad thing! :)

Also, an option to switch users from the main menu would be v helpful!

a "game" option to automatically name planets as below instead of the current randomly (?) generated name.

Star name: Sol
Planets: Sol 1, Sol 2, Sol 3, etc.
Asteroids and others: Sol A, Sol B, Sol C, etc.

Star name: Vega
Planets: Vega 1, Vega 2, Vega 3, etc.
Asteroids and others: Vega A, Vega B, Vega C, etc.

this will make jumping between star systems easier by using the pinned items.

As stated in other threads, immediately buying crystal in multiplayer games is very important for most people's build order. Especially in games where there are larger numbers of players on smaller maps, this is unfair to the last guy with the slower computer who could be paying over twice what the first guy did for crystal.

A possible solution would be to have the market prices be locked for the first 30 seconds of the game before they start fluctuating. This allows everyone to have the ratio of credits / metal / crystal that they want. Players don't have enough credits in the first 30 seconds for this to be abused, so it effectively just gives people equal footing.

After some thought the 3 major things that should be in 1.03 are

1: Fix seige frigate( the AI will build a massive number and send
them against you and fixed defense can not even slow them down making it impossible to defend without leaveing a major fleet
presence which tends to make the game all offence and defense pointless.

2: Fix the memory leaks.

3: Upgrade the AI to deal with resources...I can spy on the AI just
all the time with resouce points in his systems that it will leave
sometimes the whole game.

Improving the plnetary defenses would be nice, like better PJI's, longer range turrets, or bigger hangars. Also a defense station to put in gas giants and asteroid fields.
I have said this befor and am not scared to say it again we need space stations. most ot the defenses are pretty bad, either space stations or flak defense to defend against fighters-the normal defense gets ripped apart by fighters. and speaking of fighters more fighter squads need to be in carriers(cap carrier-4 in beginning and up to 7 at full lvl. cruiser carriers-at least 3) and hangers(at least 4 for tec&vassari and 5 for advent)-plus way more defense structures.

I dont know about 1.03 but for 1.04 I would like to see the Vasari made more multi-star friendly via super expensive "supergates"

I've made a post about this, so if you're curious go check there :P

32 or more characters allowed in player chosen names (Planets, Capital Ships, etc). I can't name my TEC Battlecruiser the "TDN Hephaestus" as it is one letter too long.

I would like to see the ai not attack me then run they had 200+ ships i had 3 guass defense platforms 1 kol battleship and 1 dreadnaught why did the enemy retreat and i would like a little more time in the mission i got 15 to in the first 2 minutes of game to give tandom corporation 1000 credits then 15 minutes later im under attack one last thing i would like if the ai would not send 78 korsov siege frigates and blow my planet up i cant defend against that they rush straight at planet as soon as they destroy it the retreat why
