Anyone remember Star Control?

Just testing the waters here, but at least for me, as soon as I saw how the planet linking in this game worked, I was reminded of the original Star Control. I would love to see a mod for Sins that would basically remake Star Control (of course without the super melee combat) for galactic domination, like how the first game in the series worked. With a little effort, I could easily see a Hierarchy vs Alliance mod, and with a lot of effort, a full campaign with diplomacy and everything.

Seeing that Atari is reviving Star Control, I don't think you want to receive a Cease and Desist letter.

Is Atari really considering bringing out another Star Control!?!!? Star Control 2 is in my top 5 of best games ever made! Do you know where I can find some info. on this?

star control was an amazing game back and the day and even still! i loved playing their skirmish games and colonizing the crazy grid. I think making a mod for SoSE is a great idea. Atari resuming star control? I wish they would but i doubt that will happen. Furthermore I doubt they would get too angry with a star control mod being created. They released the source code of star control 2 to the community so i doubt they are too fussy about an even older game getting redon.

This is all I have for now. I heard a rumor from a friend of a friend at Atari and that is what I found.

I can't see them putting up a preview site for a game they have no intention of publishing. Especially with that logo being almost a direct copy of the original.

SC2 is also in my top 5. It was the first long, hard game I beat as a kid.

Toys for Bob still owns the rights to the Star Control storyline, and as The Ur-Quan Masters remake was allowed, they're pretty lenient!

Toys for Bob website indicated as of Jun 07' they talked to Activision "The Parent Company" - so who knows. Star Control isn't Star Control without Paul Reiche III and Fred Ford (who started Toys for Bob)

Regardless, Sins is a nice reminder of how space games used to be!

They think about reviving Star Control every few years.

Personally I hated Star Control II, I thought it was too much of a clone of Starflight. The first Star Control was the most awesome strategy game prior to Dune II/Herzog Zwei, though.

well it sure would be cool if they did make another. As for modding i bet if we/anyone got serious about it and asked atari for permission to use the starcon universe they would probably say yes. I mean star control 2 was an amazing game, probably one of my favorite single player games of all time, but it was a game that didn't gain that much popularity despite it's comedic acting and deep gameplay, and a starcon mod that gained popularity would be like free advertising for atari and the series which would ultimately only boost sales if they ever did create another game in the series.

Star Control was a fun game, and Star Control 2 was an all-time classic - one of my top 5 as well. Star Control 3 was a sadly misguided attempt by a different team and is generally best forgotten, though its super melee mode wasn't bad.

Hopefully if Atari does revive the franchise, they'll get the original creators over at Toys For Bob to do it. They apparently are interested. Is Atari part of Activision, by any chance?

If Atari makes Star Control, it won't be with Reiche/Ford who created I and II. As they've both said many times they wanted nothing to do with III, and offered no help in making it. They've got their own company right now, under Activision.

Atari could make one in the way that Sierra/Monolith split, but each made their own version of "F.E.A.R." Monolith kept the real people from the game, Sierra kept the title.

SC3 was...an abortive attempt at money making, it...collapsed in a heap of....HEGEMONIC CRUX!

sigh...

Root for Toys for Bob/Activision - there was a petition going around a year ago for it to happen. According to WWW Link Activision was curious as of June 07, what that means...who knows.

edit: clarity error

Man thinking about this I just keep getting excited about the idea of a Star control 2 mod. I remember when i played through star control 2 how i thought it would be awesome to play a empire conquest rts like game that would involve the various races in the star control universe. I can see the SoSE engine being capable of providing that too! When i get more time i would definitely be willing to try and get a team together and work on this if others are interested (i don't have the most modding experience but i'd be willing to research a bunch of stuff for this mod!!!! :D)

There's been plenty of SC2 mods for several games, a bunch of clones and of course the source ports (like UQM) which all exist to this day. Even if they where working on a new Starcontrol title (please God?) they would be in a pretty bad position to make these kind of demands now.

So, go ahead I say. I'd play it :)

How could I forget. I miss the days when developers had fresh ideas, most computer games had a stunning amount of depth in them, and the games weren't all "clone number XVII" of the same tired formulas over and over again (or worse still, dumbing down of once deep games...cough...Invisible War...cough...)

Yeah, I loved the galaxy/exploration in sc2 . I wish sins had a less abstract approach to it's representation of star systems (though it makes much more sense than GC2). A sun with a random number of planets (but rarely more than one terra or arid type!) that all orbit around it. Not that the planets in sc rotated but, you know. It would be uber cool. :)

i have tried to find this on sega genesis for a while with no luck. a mod would be awesome.

I loved sc2, played it so many times that after ~12 years of not playing it I tried it again like a year ago and finished it quite easily.

anyway try out
http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

the intro music and outro was amazing, and I really liked the music of some of the species.

I'm not sure another SC could be decent without the toys for bob guys. As for them never doing it...money and clamor can chage those types of attitudes.

A friend of mine and myself are contemplating making a Star Control Mod for GalCiv. We've done most of the research and a few of the tech trees, but we've parked it until Twilight of the Arnor comes out.

Are you afraid there will never be another SC? Do not be frightened. They are powerful developers, yes, but they could not hurt you anymore than they could squish the helpless Pootworm. They love the Pootworm. They are one with the Pootworm. They are one with you. Of course you realize that this means you are one with the Pootworm. Rejoice!! To be one with the Pootworm is to be alive, and why not be alive? Is that not what living is for?

I love SC2. SC3 was okay, atleast it tried to stay true to the story. I want to see more SC2 type games. Yes, i know they got most of the idea from Starflight, which is an awesome game also. I want to see a remake of that as well.

I won't destroy you with my BUTT missile, for that would be too confrontational and to be quite honest there really aren't enough of us here for you and your big big guns to care about :shiver:

Fondly, I and II. I was less enthusiastic about III because one ship broke the game (once you got that Droog ship, you didn't need any others. Ever.)
